Dave Hughes, Montgomery County’s last survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, died Friday. The Montgomery resident was 89. A U.S. Navy veteran, Hughes was a 17-year-old seaman first class when he witnessed the Dec. 7, 1941, attack that triggered America’s entry into World War II. A total of 2,042 Americans died, and another 1,282 were injured on that infamous day. “It was a low point for me and everyone at Pearl Harbor,” Hughes said on Dec. 7, 2012, the 71st anniversary of the attack. “We got caught with our pants down, plain and simple.”
