» Topic: Italeri PT Boat Update Set Details
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=3134

Greetings all,
Just returned from a trip to Georgia. While I was on the road I noticed that Italeri has released the details of their update set. I'm still trying to find out what the retail price of this set will be. I saw at least one company in Poland is offering it for a price that converts to about $23.00. Nobody else has it listed so don't quote on me on that!

You can look at the set and the plans for yourself. The only thing I don't quite get is why only one of each type torpedo and no roll off rack for the Mk. XIII. If I would change one thing I would have gone with two Mk XIII torpedoes and roll off racks.

Anyway, here you go. I'm going to post this in a number of sites but starting here. :-)

Box art.

Photo etch. Now this is very cool and maybe my favorite part of this set. Italeri listening to us added the day cabin connector plates made from photo etch and taken from Jeff's drawings.

Sprue 1. This is another key sprue. There's room for detailing but this is a respectable SO Radar. Note that they included both styles of mast and domes. A very nice touch. You'll see the 20mm shield with brackets. I would have preferred to see more tripods and another 20mm but if you want to back date to factory condition this is a key piece.

Sprue 2. This contains parts for the 40mm and the 20mm guns.

Instructions. This will show you what all is provided in this set. Thanks Italeri for listening to us and bringing us this nice update set.

Fantastic, so wonderful that Italeri has listened to the guys that love PT BOATS. And now the 77 Footer....................

Getting closer Dave, thanks for the update. That is a bit silly to just include 1 torpedo of each type though. And I surly would have preferred a few kapoks over the life rings. I've also checked a few suppliers and nothing yet on when they might be getting them ready to ship.
Frank, you start building a few 77 footers and your going to need a bigger room.

Cool set, I guess, some nice stuff, but...only one Mark VIII and one Mark XIII torpedo?

What's up with that? I don't get it. We need four of each -- or at least two of each, to show warheads in open tubes.

Thanks for the update, David. A very nice thing Italeri has done here. Hopefully it will be a big seller and lead to more sets...maybe a torpedo trolley or two, some laundry to string up, some other deck weapons, etc. This new set will provide a 20mm gun I can use to put in the forward tub when I start my PT-157, as well as allow me to backdate my PT-596 kit some day. Win-win!
I sent an e-mail to Archer Transfers about them doing a multi-number sheet in white and subdued gray for all of the deck areas, not the big hull numbers. I received a generated reply that they are no longer taking requests or doing custom orders. Too bad. Gloss coating for decals can really alter the tone of Tamiya paints, in my experience.

Maybe there is a way around too much of this or not enough of that in the upgrade set - I'm thinking that a number of us will be buying the set fort a particular thing or two, like the SO Radar or the 40mm or what ever. If that is true then we should make a place where we can let it be known within our group that I have both torpedoes available, or I have no use for depth charge... Hopefully you can see where I am going with this. We could have a small Co-Op where we could trade parts or sell to each other for a nominal price. Just a thought, but if you are in need of 4 torpedoes it would be a shame to purchase 4 upgrade sets and throw 90% of the material in the scrap box.

Unless I missed it, I didn't see the MK-10 mount for the 20mm Cannon. They included the old style mount. Not sure why only one torpedo each..........Still nice to have the raft, SO radar, and a 40MM Cannon, and the depth charges.

Hi Pat,
I suspect the next release will be a crew set. The one they did for the 596 boat was very popular.

For numbers I would suggest reaching out to Kenny Loop at Gators Mask and have him cut you some custom paint masks. If you give him the exact sizes you're looking for he can make custom paint masks for your boat. Just make sure to figure out the exact size and give him an idea of the font style you want and he'll make these for you at a very reasonable price. I had him do some for an F-100 project I'm working on and they came out great. Have him make the boat number you want like 107 or 105 and not individual numbers. It doesn't cost that much to do complete masks with the full number.

I think it would be fun to see somebody do a nice decal set of PT Boat Chart House art. Can't really call it nose art. But if there is interest and enough reference could be organized (including color) somebody may do them.

Good idea about swapping parts Jerry.

Nice David, thanks for posting all the details of the set. I see they included 2 of the day room roof connecting plates trimmed off for the later angled turrets on PT 372 and on. Although the instructions show their use, solid ones should be used and they shouldn't overlap the rubber mat. And thanks for the credit for pointing them out although they probably used the drawings Dick was kind enough to post for their design.

Welcome Todd, I've been following your build with interest. Thanks for taking the time to do that for us modelers.

Are you pretty sure about there being only 1 of each torpedo type? It doesn't make sense. If true, I hope some enterprising aftermarket molder will put a complete set out.

Jerry...you were reading my mind!!! As you, I know there are some parts of the detail set I'm more interested in than others. I know I'd like an extra raft, but probably won't use the 40mm. There's a trade! Some sort of forum for that would be nice.
David...I used Kennys masks for the 596 kit and was very pleased with the results. May give that some thought. I do have a friend who can make custom decals, and I'm sure he can replicate the "Chart Art" as seen on the 157 boat "Aces-n-Eights." Squadron has been doing some decal sheets as of late, maybe they would be open to doing a sheet geared towards PT modelers.

Yes, one of each torpedo included. I thought they would include enough torpedoes to update a 103 class boat with roll off racks. You can do some fun things with the Mk. VIII torpedo such as model it being loaded, displayed next to the boat, etc. But I don't know what you do with one roll off torpedo with no rack.

Hello,
It may be an idea to cut the tail off the Mk VIII and make it fit in a tube with the breech door open, which would look pretty cool.
There were some racks included in the Lion Roar etched sets for the 596 kit IIRC.

Best Regards,
Stu.

Here's my thoughts on the torpedoes. Make a rolling torpedo stand and have it on the pier getting ready to be loaded. I'm going to have a converted Army truck with a crane on the back loading up a few at the torpedo shop to take over to the waiting boat. Get the feeling I might need a few update kits. Hey guys, I'll have plenty of 40mm to trade.

For the torpedoes, seems like it is time to make a mold and make your own castings.

Heck, guys, I'd trade you most anything in this kit for three more Mark VIII torpedoes/vanes/propellers!

I saw a pre-sale for this set from Berliner Zinnfiguren for about $30, So I'm guessing when the set hits the internet maybe around $23,

Over the next few weeks I am going to work on some castings that have bronze powder in them that can be buffed or polished in an effort to reproduce the surface of the torpedo body without resorting to painting - I'll keep the Forum posted and we can maybe think about doing some castings. Hi,
Found this on the web, you may have seen it already but there are some nice details for those with the space to build a pier.

That is amazing. I think that could be the best detailed PT diorama I have ever seen. While you are on that page, click index and then check out the downed P-38 diorama. Simply outstanding. Now where did he get all those great sailor and native figures?
