Does anyone know how the 156 got its nickname COWBOY?
I thought there might be a story there on how it came to be.

Julie,
This is purely speculation on my part......with help from Knights of the Sea.
Harding 'Slick' Miller went to Ron 9 around April/May 1944 and became the Third Officer on the 156. He then became the Executive Officer and finally the CO of the 156, leaving the boat the first of August, 1945.
Maybe the 'COWBOY' name had something to do with Mr. Miller being born and raised in Texas ! [:-confused2-:]

Steve;
The color shot of PT 156 with artwork on it I think is on the video of RON 9 at Rendova/Lumbari. Also shown are a number of other boats, artwork. you can find it on Youtube. iTS TITLED: PT Boat - Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron RON_9_Boats.f4v

You guys are outstanding! Thank you!! The video really gives me a feel for what my father-in-law went through on New Guinea during WW II. This Board never ceases to amaze me!

Thanks Steve N. That explanation of how she got the nickname seems like the best one I have heard. It makes sense to me.
Thanks to all who posted, I loved the video too.
