» Topic: Possible oddballmodel of ne Italeri kit
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=2944

Thinking about other possible boats or scenarios to depict with the new Italeri kit. Then I rememberd that sometime ago somewhere I saw a picture of a PT boat with a JEEP on the foredeck. Anyone else ever seen that one?

I wonder what the judges at a contest would say if someone entered a boat with a jeep on the foredeck?

Cheers

Years ago I entered the Lindberg kit in a show. The judges told me that a green paint scheme on a naval craft was fantasy.

Last show I entered.

Peter;
Yes RON 34 or 35. Don Millman had these photos, also another was of the crew taking a Harley Davidson off the foredeck.
Take care,

What I've learned about model shows is that if you provide documented evidence of your build, for example a photo of the jeep lashed down to the deck of a PT Boat, they will accept the entry as legitimate. I did this at our local show with PT-505 diorama. I put together a booklet with the kit pieces as well as the history of the scene I was depicting. 1st place!

So Peter, if you have a photo include it with your entry with a little narrative and if you workmanship is good you should do well.

Great idea by the way! That's what I would love to see from our model building community are scenes like that and trust me, they would draw attention at a model show.

Peter;
Speaking from experiance.... I won 1st, 2nd. 3rd, and best of show in one exhibit! Dave is correct, documentation or photos to back up the diorama is the key!!!!! There are a million doubters out there, but when you place documents or actual photos in their face.......

It's been a long time since I saw the picture I'm thinking about but that one you linked to could very well be it. I think it would make an interesting model. I do wonder how they got the Jeep on and then off the boat.

Also; due to overly pretentious tknow it all rivet counting judges at the shows I stopped entering contests many years ago. Now I build what I want for me. The reason I build moels of any sort is to relax and have fun. I don't strive to recreate a particular subject as it appeared at a certain instant in time.

Hi Peter
Have to agree with you about modelling.
I build for Me & Fun as long as I'm having Fun then I'm happy.
If it looks something near to the model I want then it dosn't have to be 100% accurate .
Keep Modelling.

I stopped entering any model shows back some 15 years now. Judges with flashlights, and looking for every nut and bolt drove me crazy. Not one of them knew a fraction about the boats as I did, yet they were trying to tell me something was missing. Too political with most of the winners being members of the club. I now put models on display only if the clubs ask me. Just another way to keep the boats out there. To the guys on the board here that win, it is a real feather in your cap, because the competition in these shows is tough. Ted, if you won all those trophies, I am sending some of my projects your way.....................

I ran a contest for about seven years (IPMS Seattle Spring Show), and while I was too busy to be a judge, I worked with them quite a bit. It really depends on the show. The IPMS rules are based on fit and finish, so if you have a PT boat that has the details correct but seams and glue goobers visible it's going to lose to the PT-109 with a quad .50 on the bow that's otherwise flawless. This negates the need to debate references and correct color shades on the judging teams, but rivet counters hate it.

If you're looking for an interesting thing to model, how about a mine layer?

Frank;
WHOA! Stan is still your man, so save your money and buy that new cloning machine, that will be invented soon. I am just shooting for the project I spoke to you about, and that is going to be after my RON 40 diorama, and my PT 195. I don't even consider myself remotely close to Stan's class, thats for sure, but yeah , I did win all, in the same show, and have never been in a club. I guess I am too much of a non-conformist at heart! Pretty funny for a career Navy man, huh?
Take care,

Intersting as I saved a screen shot from Devil Boats a year or so ago and that image is nearly identical to it.

I have a couple of styrene pussy cats and some styrene dogs too in 1/35 scale. Ooh the possibilities for a fun scene build.

Cheers

Jeff,
I love the cat on the mast. That is an awesome picture! Every boat needs a good mouser! I'm keeping a copy of that one!
Thanks

Yah David, I got a kick out of it too. It's got a great perch to spot vermin from, a serious job!

I got the pic from a History Channel show Peter, it's probably a clip from Devil Boats as you mention.
