Training classes were going on all the time at Melville, and of course the Packard Engine School. Let's not forget the shakedown base in Florida, which had an extensive engine class on base. I have many original papers and documents which belonged to Lt. J. A Michaud, who at that time was the Engineering Department Head at Melville. He was always constantly training men for the PT SERVICE in engineering and used many training aids and methods. This is no doubt a classroom training aid but to be honest, where it may have come from would be a guess, you have three choices here, Packard Engine School, MTBSTC in Melville, and the Sub Chaser Base in Florida.

I THINK THE PACKARD SCHOOL BECAUSE OF THE REVERSING GEAR, I DONT THINK ITWAS NEVER USED ON PTS.

Well , I am sure you know that the Packard Engine had it's own built in reverse gear. My engine says it was made by Joe's Reverse Gears, I think they were in Connecticut. at the time, but have changed hands over the years.

THE CUTAWAY HAS TWO, THE ONE ON ALL 4M PACKARD PLUS THE SECOND THAT ALLOWS THE ENGINE TOO RUN FULL SPEED COUNTER ROTATION.

Sorry about that, I wasn't even paying attention to that second gear box. Must be getting old. Never saw that before, but than again, this is the first time I have seen this type of cut away before.

That 5kw generator appears to be un-used, sat in somebody's basement for decades before coming accros it. Now to find its little brother, 2kw generator.

Hi Randy and Frank,
We had Liz Ware come visit us from Chicago last September. She brought several Packard books with her for me to scan. (Her dad was Chief Engineer for Marine Engines at Packard) She had this book called "Packards on the water" and this photo was at the back of the book. The gear is labeled as "Packard Bevel Pinion Reduction Gear" that reduces propeller speed 2 to 1 and was designed specifically for USAF Crash Rescue Boats. It "has other outstanding features such as built in thrust bearings and reversing oil pump" per the caption. Here is the photo. Jerry PT658 Portland

I am with Randy on this one, you just never know what you can find out there! I am convinced we are just scratching the surface!! Who knows maybe next week someone will find an SO-A radar antenna and set, or some props...who knows!
