Hey Dick,
Do you suppose you could do what Ted suggested to limit that spam? Have all new first time users first message be approved by you before they are allowed to post to the message board. I dont know anything about website administration but it sounds like a good idea. Of course I have no idea how difficult that would be! Just thinking out loud! Jerry

Thanks guys . . .

This year they have been coming in larger numbers, mainly China at about 90% followed by Russia at less than 10%, with the little bit left left over, divided by the rest of the world. My only real tool to deal with them is to BAN their IP address which I have by the thousands, but China web spamming companies own hundreds of millions of IP address. Once they can't enter the post section, they simple reboot their system to another IP, and so on and so on until they find one that will work. Its actually a lot of work, but when you only pay someone 30 cents hour it becomes no biggy for the spamming company, which is also partially owned by the Chinese government themselves.

That night there were 54 attempts to spam. I caught and removed 11 prior to most members seeing them (around midnight PST), then 9 that came after I hung it up for the night and went to bed. Those last 9 most of you saw and resulted in Will's nice comment. The other 34 weren't as diligent and were foiled from getting through at all. We get about 50 attempts a day, mainly late at night between 10pm and 6am (my west coast time).

If you enter this message board from the main page, most don't, you will see a line with the number of registered users, it currently states 14,406 members. Actually we have fewer than 500 real members, with about 300 visitors daily (if you note most of the visitors do not partake in the discussion but do read the wealth of our facts, speculations and our sometimes attempts at humor, however, fewer then 50 regularly post or reply. So, as to the 14,406 members, near 14,000 of those users are simply spammers attempting or wishing to post spam. As of last February I removed around 10,000 from the role, leaving about 2,000. Since February as you can do the math, over 12,000 spammers have attempt to post, most of which don't get through the first layer of defense - thank god.

The only other defense I have, which I would hate to adopt, is to approve each and every posts. Sadly I can't customize the selection, just all. This wouldn't be fair to delay what I like to think are timely post, waiting for me to have the time from my paying work, to read and then approve or disapprove. This would break the back of this board's responsiveness, allowing comment at anytime in real time. There are many many message boards like that (post requiring approval), and I think a couple are PT related, not sure who runs them, but they are or were around.

So much for all that, to long winded here, better go back to that paying work I mentioned about, or I'll have to fire myself.

Dick . . .

PS: Funny, well not so funny, as I was typing this post, a spammer came through - damn !
Yes, Chinese, nock-off designer hand bags !

Will . . .

I had trouble picking a bag, since it was to be a surprise gift to you.

At first I was thinking the Armadillo, then decided the bulldog better fit your mood, but after long thought I decided because of your advancing years a double fanny pack (in 1941 Ocean Gray # 5-O) would be much more useful and fulfilling. However, since the gift isn't going to be a surprise anymore maybe I should give to Frank. I can always have PT-109 stenciled on the sides

Dick, I think this is a very thoughtful gift for Will or myself. Although I am not as aged as Will, I am getting there, so why not get a head start. The PT-109 on the side will be just fine.

And I'd vote for the armadillo for Will !

Yes, I reluctantly agree that Frank should get the handbag since he has so many matching outfits to wear it with.

Dick;
You are the man!!! Since you used the word "Foiled" in your VERY explanetory, but insightful post, you can consider yourself THE BATMAN of the messageboard. In the future all you really have to do is post a ZOWIE or BLAM or BOOF, and we will know what you mean and the result.
Seriously, Adam West of the messageboard, thank you foe what you do ALWAYS!
Take care,

Thank you very much Dick, it's a shame these spammers pollute this site with their trash. I know it's a never ending job for you. So much for the Chinese govt containing their internet... and thank you very much for being man enough to model the double fanny pack for us! :D

Dick,
I really appreciate all the hard work and diligence on your part in maintenance of this magnificent website! I had no idea how much effort it takes, and thanks for taking the time to explain how things work. Shame on those hackers and more power to Batman! Jerry
