Jeff;
O.K. I stand corrected.
While I love mythology, I am a little rusty, I really covered all of this while attending Copaigue Junior High, on Long Island. While in Mrs. Ciccone's 6th grade English class(1975), we covered both Greek and Roman mythology, so as you can see, it was a few of years ago.
I lean more towards Greek mythology. This is getting off subject here but...I have visted Athens and went on an inter-island tour boat in December 2000, with my wife, and I visited Suda Bay, Crete in 2007 on deployment, but in both cases, I did not have the time, or the opportunity to visit where I really wanted to go, the palace at Knossos on the central northern shore of Crete(near Heraklion), which is the home King Minos and the temple of the Minatuar.This is an area where on May 20th 1940, during Operation Mercury, That a distant relative, that I have researched(who is the spitting image of my paternal grandfather. My Grandfather was born in Darmstadt, Germany in 1885)), jumped during the invasion of Crete. Major Erich Walther while in command of IV Kompanie III Battalion 1st Fallschirmjager Division(he later commanded the 4th Fallschirmjager Regiment in Cassino, Italy. During Operation Market Garden, Kampfgrupe Walther. Finally, in Jan 1945 he was promoted to Generalmajor and commanded the Hermann Göring 2nd Parachute Panzer-Grenadier Division ).

This is why I still want to return to Crete, and this time take my time, looking around. In 2005, however, I did have the honor of working with 150 members of lll Kompanie Fallschirmjägerbataillon 261 of Airborne Brigade 26 "Saarlandbrigade, Division Spezielle Operationen, formerly members of the 1st Fallschirmjager Division. It was great to work and hang out with guys, a time I will never forget.
Sorry for being long winded, it tends to happen from time to time.
Take care,
TED

Drew;
Yes, also Walther Glass which makes fine crystal. seriously all of the Walther family is related, distant, but related. The family started in Lower Silesia and Saxony ,Germany in the 1100's and migrated west to Westphalia, Rhineland, and Bavaria provinces there was originally a castle located near Darmstadt, which is where my grandfather was born, but i am sure it gone now. On a somewhat grand scale, there is still a hotel in Pontresina, Switzerland completed in 1907. The Sporthotel Pontresina was purchased by the Walther family in 1934, and in 1945 they were entrusted to rebuild the hotels Palace and Steinbock. Once rebuilt in 1956 it became known as Hotel Walther-Palace. http://www.hotelwalther.ch/
I e-mailed the current owners(cousins Thomas and Anne)and asked them for a complementary free night when my wife and I arrive, for a week or two of skiing. I guess they are waiting for me to show up, because they have yet to respond.
Hey you want a real laugh, i just found out there is a crater on the moon named after Bernhard Walther who was a 14th and 15th century astonomer, he is one of us too!! LOL!!
Take care,
