Hey Guys, I picked up this interesting letter from United States Fleet Commander, MTB Philippine Sea Frontier. It is dated September 21, 1945. It s from the Commander of the Philippine Sea Frontier to the Officer In Charge of the Fleet Records Division. Subject is the award of the Navy Unit Commendation, which is being forwarded. The sailor this is being awarded to was Harold Vic Breunig, TM2c USN, who was transferred to the US for reassignment, so the award was being forwarded. The only thing I found was that he was with Ron 4, but with the letter was a chit for one Coca Cola, MTB RONS 7th FLEET SQUADRON 33. Any information would be great. I also have the ribbon that was with the package. I know Ron 33 never was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, so no clue as to which Ron Mr. Breunig was with.

The only Breunig I see in the database doesn't have a first or middle name listed but is credited to being in BASE 4. And that name doesn't show up in any muster reports either. Hmmm.

Sounds like it's research time!

What I found in Ancestry VA death records; could be him. Not a lot of detail though.

Name: Harold Breunig
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 15 Feb 1922
Death Date: 2 May 2010
Branch 1: NAVY
Enlistment Date 1: 16 Nov 1942
Release Date 1: 10 Nov 1945

Charlie

That certainly is much more then I had to begin with. Not sure why he was awarded Presidential Unit Ribbon though. This could be a tough one, as PT BOAT HEADQUARTERS has even less then this, just last name and RON 4 Status.

You first said the Navy Unit commendation which is different than the PUC. Two different awards.

IF he was on BASE 4, then they could have gotten the award.

Also, this Breunig I found is listed in some obit files as Howard J.

No it gives no serial number on the letter. It is requesting the award be forwarded. Just his name and Rank is all that is on this letter. Why he had the Coca Cola chit for a soda from RON 33 is beyond me, unless he was with that Ron, then rotated back to RON 4. Could have been a part of the BASE FORCE as well.
