All,

Odd find today. I participated in a meeting for volunteers to help work about the USS Iowa when it arrives in San Pedro this summer. The meeting was help in a room in the Martime Museum in San Pedro, CA.

Interesting room, as the wall was covered with ships plaques, most likely removed from the ships while they were being scapped at Southwest Marine. Looking at the plaques I saw the USS Endicott, Adm. Buckley's command. I casual skipped over a large brass plate that appeared to be a top plate for a capstan. Coming back to the plate I noticed the name USS Mobjack AGP 7. A very interesting find...

That brings back memories for me. After the war the Mobjack was turned over to the US Coast & Geodetic Survey for use as a survey shipand was renamed the USC&GSS Pioneer. My father was a commissioned officer in the Coast Survey and served on the Pioneer as her navigating officer in the late 1950s. I was eight or nine years old, and during the summer, when school was out and if the ship was in port, my dad would sometimes take me with him to spend the day on her. I built model kits in her wardroom and even got to make a "voyage'" on her once, from the repair yard across San Francisco Bay back to her berth at Alameda. I can recall seeing the brass plate on the capstan and reading the ship's name on it. It's nice to know that something of her still exists.
