Tony;
If it exists it is probably at PTHQ in Germantown TN. They have in excess of 15,000 photos.
Good Luck!

My Dad served on PT212 in Ron 15. I have a bunch of pictures of various boats in the Ron around 1946. If that is the time you are interested in let me know and I will send them to you.

Hello. Do you know if your father served at PT 212 in October 1943? Maybe he remember the night of 21/22 October when PTs 206, 212 and 216 torpedoed and sank the german minelayer JUMINDA near off Porto Santo Stefano. I have the action report of the 15. US-MTB Squadron, but I need the journals of the PTs which were involved in that action. There must be a mistake in the action report of the Ron 15 as Ron-leader Barnes wrote that the action was in night of 22./23. October 1943. But the loss of the minelayer JUMINDA was one night earlier. I think that in the journals are the correct date. And I hope to find more information in this journals in behalf of the attack. Can you help? Sorry for my bad english.

Tony - I haven't found a Ron 15 commissioning photo, only a decommissioning photo in 1944. Let us know if you have success!

Kerry - My understanding is that Ron 15 ceased to exist in October of 1944. Was 1946 a typo? Please feel free to share with us a sample of the pictures...we love photos on here!

If you haven't checked it out - make sure you go to www.pistolpackinmama.net.

Krelle - Good luck with your search...I posted a reply to your other post.

Hello Steven!

I have a couple of photos of the "Eight Ball" on my site, www.pistolpackinmama.net including one of your grandfather's boat nested up next to my grandfather's boat off the coast of southern France:

Jim, Thanks for sending that "raw" scan...It's Great! I tried to respond to your message but it came back saying that it was blocked. Granddad was a gunners mate on the 208. I know he was on the 208 for Operations "Gun" and "Newt" because I heard him mention it before and he received a British Distinguished Service medal for actions during operation Gun. When he passed away he left me the few photos he had and a German passport type book in a leather binding with German medals and patches tucked inside...He never said where they came from. However, after he passed a crewmate: Bill Burton eluded to a capture of a German U-Boat...I have a clipping photo that says original crew PT 208 Ron 15 1944, my Granddad is in the back row..if you can unblock me I'll send it to you, not real sure how to add it here...Thanks again- Steven

Tony,

Are you related to a man who was on the 203 ? My Father was Exec on the 216, the night the 216, 203 & 206 were bombed by planes off Pantellaria ( June, 1943).

Yeah...there is a link at the top of every page:

"CLICK HERE Download Photo Posting Instructions CLICK HERE"

It's a breakdown on how to do it. There a couple of steps and requires another website, but it is not difficult. Plus, we'll help if you have any problems!

Very cool Steve...thanks for sharing. I wonder what those long, slightly bent tubes are on the deck in the background of the fourth picture? Extra fuel?

Steven,

Thanks for the great pictures. I thought that 'Eightball' was a zebra and it kind of looks like she was in your last posted picture. Not sure though.

I believe 208 started out with the zebra pattern and at some point was repainted flat gray...Seen pics with both paint jobs... Granddad would have loved seeing all this again...

Nerd: Those tubes are the compressed air devices for firing the torpedoes.

Newsnerd,
The Higgins PT Boat was equipped with torpedo tubes that had a compressed air reservior mounted on top of the main torpedo tube. This air was used to launch the torpedo. They did not use a powder charge like the early Elco boats did. I think the boat even was equipped with an air compressor for recharging the torpedo tube air reserviors. I am not sure why they are curved. Jerry

Steve - Sorry for the delay in responding. Yes, Lewis Bendl is my uncle. I have been researching the events of that action and have a pretty good idea of what happened. I have the action report, as well as two books that listed the event. I am always interested to learn any new information.

Thanks

PT 208 captured German prisoners during their tour off the coast of Italy in 1944. My Grandfather had these relics from a German POW. It is a leather bound "Soldbuch" or Military Passbook with patch and medals and a paperback "Postsparbuch" or Post Office Savings Book. I Can't make out the name. Here's a link to photos of the items and a photo of captured prisoners along side of the 208.

will try to locate that also.

Tony,
I checked Stanley Barnes' memoirs of Ron 15, and his recollection of that evenings action is the same as stated in ' At Close Quarters'. Still doing some searching in some other
correspondence. I have a photo I'd like to show you, would you email me at slnuge@verizon.net. It is interesting that the accounts of that action say you're Uncle took the place of a sick friend for the mission. Was he not part of the 203's crew ?

About the German artifacts I have from Granddad. After a long search I have located the family of the German soldier captured by PT 208. He died some time ago, but his son is living in Bavaria. Looking forward to seeing what happens next as this develops.
