Hello from Oregon,
In response to Jerry Beasley and Frank Andruiss interest, I took some photos of the interior of the 40mm ammo can and ammo box that we have on the PT658. I hope these photos answer your questions about how the inside of the ammo can looks. Jerry

Those photos are great Jerry. Boy, I must say though, trying to remove those clipped rounds from that can in a hurry was no easy task. I bet there were a few scraped knuckles using that method. I have one of those wooden crated ammo boxes, with one 4 clip round, can ya spare any, LOL...........

Hi Jerry,
Thanks for sharing the pictures. My friend Jerry brought his container with rounds (just like yours) to our ship club meeting. I was amazed at the quality of construction of the container. Mostly I was amazed that the mfg put so much effort into it. That thing is built like a tank. But on the other hand it would not be good if these rounds were involved in a small fire or something similar that would compromise the rounds. They would go off like a small bomb.
Anyway, great stuff. Now we need to figure out if we can replicate this container open in 1/35.
PS. Do you have any photos or thoughts about the construction of those angle iron racks behind the 40mm in the pictures you recently sent out. Looks like simple construction but more detail would be helpful.

Hi David,
I believe I have seen plans for the angle iron racks for holding these cans on the Louisiana Digital Library Higgins Collection. Try looking under "40mm ammo rack" as a search term and see what comes up. I bet AL Ross or Dick have seen it. Sorry I cant be more help right now. Talk to you later. Jerry

Good lead but no luck. I did find a drawing for a 40mm RSL. There was also a rack but not like the field built racks we see on the Elco photos. Maybe Al or somebody will come through on that. My guess is that there were no drawings. My best hope may be photos.

Hey Frank!
You are 100% correct in your thoughts on scraping your knuckles trying to get clips out of those ammo cans. I can personally attest to that fact,s since I have skinned my own knuckles several times in the last several years and I was not under the stress of battle! I did however, roundly curse the infernal designer of these cans! Jerry

Hi Jerry
Thanks for the kind words! I must admit that I kind of get a kick out of it. I am always happy to be of service, and I am pretty much in a unique position to do so.. I feel that my group has a special responsibility to the general public and with this board in particular and the people on here. We are all trying to keep the "Can Do" spirit of the WW2 PT Boaters alive in any way we can. Thanks again for the good words. I also would like to acknowledge that I dont feel like I am the only one on this board who helps a lot of people. Frank, and Will and Al and Dick and Garth and Jeff and Jim and Gene and Don Shannon and Charlie.... well you get the picture Jerry

Well said Jerry - everyone on the board is tremendously helpful, you are just the cool kid that can walk out to the garage and when you raise the door there is a real PT Boat there to look at or take pictures of. Regardless of our interest and/or background, this forum is a wonderful thing to be part of and it's always fun to see a question or request posted that you can participate in helping to provide the answer.
