http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=2300

I just read in today's paper that Cliff Robertson passed away on Saturday. The obituary mentioned first his role as JFK in PT-109.

Fair winds and following seas. He was a really good guy.

For those of us who became fasinated with PT BOATS, I will never forget CLIFF ROBERTSON and his role as JFK in the movie PT-109. We have lost a wonderful actor and a man who really felt close to the PT BOAT VETERANS. It was because of this movie that I fell in love with the boats as young 10 year old. GOD BLESS YOU CLIFF ROBERTSON................

I was six at the time the movie came out. I fell in love with those boats right then. I wonder what the movie would have been like had Warren Beaty decided to accept the role.

Not only was Cliff Robertson close to PT Veterans, but he also owned , restored , and flew a number of Warbirds. Up until a few years he owned a stunning Spitfire MK IX(he owned it for over 20 years). Most people don't know that he also flew one of the Mosquitoes in 633 Squadron, and he was trying to buy one from the RAF, because they used the last 5 Mosquitoes in the RAF to film the movie, but the deal fell through. Another item that most people don't is in 1978 Cliff flew tons and tons of food and medical supplies in to Ethiopia during the fammine of 1978. and on September 11, 2001 at 9am he was climbing 7500 ft above the Twin Towers on his way from his home at Water Mill, Long Island to his home in La Jolla, California. The world has lost a great person.
Clear skies and a nice tail wind as you climb higher and higher in your Spitfire once more.

Did you all know Cliff was an avid aviator? On his tribute page he's in a high performance glider. The following looks like a JN-4

I did not! Ted, did you?

Frank... a great show of self-restraint.

Being from a generation that only knew actors like him by watching black and white movies with Pop on a rainy Saturday, I lack the connection everyone else has with his other characters and such. But just that one role and those PT's meant I knew him a young child before I knew the contempory actors of my day. And then reading about his military aviation connections...what cool guy. They sure don't make 'em like they used to, huh?
