» Topic: 40 mm mount on PT658
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=2249

I haven't been able to visit the forum in months so I'm a little late on the uptake here, but Jerry, I agree with all the previous posts, that the 658 looks fantastic in her new War-Paint
Looking at the photos I was curious if the 40mm mount would be the same as that used on Elco 80 footers? I'm backdating an Italeri kit to the 488 boat of RON 33 & haven't been able to track down any references photos or drawings of the earlier (non pyramid style [I call it]) mount of the stern 40s.
Looking at the pics made me wonder if the 658 uses a standard mount, or if it's specific.
Thanks & Awesome job!

Hi Blake,
The Bofors mount on PT658 was originally 40-mm Automatic Gun M1 (AA) mounted on the 40-mm Antiaircraft Gun Carriage M2A1. We obtained it from the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park back in 1993 or 1994 through the efforts of CAPT Harry Weidmaier (now deceased). I was told it originally had some hydraulic stuff on it that one of our gunners mates removed. It never had the pyramid pedestal on it. It has a cylindrical pedistal. That has always bothered me, maybe someday we will get around to making a facimile of the pyramid mount. I hope this clears things up. Jerry

The mark of 40-mm guns used on PTs in WW2 was Mark III. Does this help?
