Nice link Al, thanks for posting. While surfing through the pages, at about 10 was a clip of Devil Boats. I was surprised it was in color. I had only seen the B&W, which is the one I posted on YouTube.

Thanks for sharing that Al. I got sucked into watching video clips for about an hour. I especially liked the footage in the Green Islands and also the one at Pearl where they pulled the torpedo and did the maintenance. I saved this link.

I was fortunate to pull it from a thread over on STEELNAVY. A bunch of guys have been posting a wide range of clips covering mostly larger warships, many in color.

I just finished watching my tenth one. I love some of the footage, which is in color. I like the fact that you can purchase still shots from the films, which will come in handy for me. Thanks Al for grabbing this great footage. I like the Green Island footage, which is over 5 minutes.............

The pictures of Green Island are very interesting to me. These films were supposedly taken on Mar 12, 1944 - according to my records our Squadron 19 arrived at Green Mar 11, 1944. All the Higgins boats shown in the film are Ron 19 boats because we were the first Higgins squadron there. The 237 boat shown in the film was a Ron 19 boat. I do not recognize any of the personel in the pictures. The night the film was taken (Mar 12, 1944) we patroled between New Britain and New Ireland about 25 miles south of Rabaul.

Great video!! In the Green Island video alone I see not onlt the RON 19 boats, but PT 168, PT 167(with Tent and laundry on bow), and thanks to the zoom, Earl Richmond's PT 108!!!

"Devil Boats" in color? I knew it existed somewhere!
Now we need someone (Dick? Frank?) to get this PT classic dowloaded in its entirety in color, or the PT Boats, Inc. Headquarters to get it put on a DVD, or...something.
The U.S. Government Archive Number for "Devil Boats," according to Critical Past, is:

I've sent an email to Critical Past asking about obtaining a copy of the full documentary, and will post their reply.

I was equally excited when I saw they had DEVIL BOATS in color. I own an original copy of this film in 16mm by Warner Brothers, but it is Black and White.To see this clip (3 minutes 46 seconds) in color is awesome. Like you, I sent an E-Mail to the Company the other day in hopes they might offer the full version. I hope they get back to me soon, but I have a feeling their might be copy Laws on this, because it was put out and owned by Warner Brothers. We shall see. I would certainly love to see this in color...........

I bought some of the still shots available for each of the short films you can watch. I decided to use the method of downloading a JPEG FILE, which they offer at $2.97 per download. I just got the ones I ordered and they are not that good, It was the cheapist of the still photos you can buy, but for me the JPEG download is not worth the money. They say the photos you can buy are of much better quality, but are a bit pricey.......

Here's Critical Past's email reply to me about the availability of the complete "Devil Boats" color documentary:
"We do have 'Devil Boats' in its entirety. It is cut into 10 clips on our site. The first clip...is the beginning of the movie, and the rest of the movie can be seen by clicking the 'next video' button underneath the video player for the clip. Because we cut our frames accurately, if these 10 clips were downloaded and assembled together, the movie would be perfectly re-formed into one continuous production.

By the way, the site that Charlie has posted for the movie DEVIL BOATS does have that film in color. I contacted the company this afternoon and it is on one of the DVD's they sell. You get some black and White footage for the first part, than the last part is the film (in color) running the full lenth. Goes for $29.95................Better than having to buy all 10 short clips of the movie, and still having to put them together to make one movie. Thanks Charlie.

Yeah, Frank I ha ve that color version on DVD. Good footage, clumsy dialog typical of the training films of the era. I have always assumed that PT-1315 in the film was the 315 boat, which was stationed at Melville at some point.

I agree with Frank, of course -- "Devil Boats" all in one piece on the $29.95 DVD would be much better than buying and trying to piece together all the 10 parts of the Critical Past videos.
I hadn't known that the Technicolor version was even available, or that easily obtained. How come PT Boats, Inc. Headquarters hasn't had a good color copy of the film for sale, as they have with "Giant Killers?"
Hopefully, the clarity and color quality on that DVD is as good as the Critical Past parts -- which looked pretty doggone good to my eye for an almost 60-year-old government training film.
