Victor,
Alyce has the original. It was published in the PT Boat newsletter (summer edition) in 1981. I have a scan of it but I suspect you need a better quality copy. Let me know. Thanks, Mark

Victor;
I originally thought this was his graduation photo, as he is in a midshipman uniform. However, this photo maybe an earlier photo, as all the photos in the USNA Class of 1937 "LUCKY BAG" Yearbook, are taken in dress blue uniforms.
Also, Scott left off a forward slash in the short cut address.

Victor;
You will be the MacDaddy of PT Boat guys if you can find one o him in the P.I. It appears that there was 1-2 cameras in all of RON 3, during this time and I believe at least 1 was lost. Al and Mark have always been the best contacts for this RON.
Take care,

Mark;
Good job! Ensign Leonard R. Hardy who is in the photo with DeLong, went to MTB RON 1 and was CO of PT 24 from 8/18/41-summer 1942. Huston I have not found. The enlisteds in the photo were spread across RON 1, 2, and 3.
Thanks.
Take care,

Hi All, just a question since this topic is on Lt. De Long ,

Has anyone found the 31 Boat in the Phiilipines and if not with all the receant mudslides earthquakes and such might she be lost never to be found?

Also the same question for the 41 Boat ?

So does anyone reading this have any ideas or knowledge of there possible recovery or being found past or presant?

Depending on wich book you read there is always a variotion of the end of the 41 Boat but the 31 Boats sinking is allways the same, Lt. De Longs Report of the sinking is very clear on the events of that night.

As for the 41 Boats end I lean towards MMFC John Tuggles version of events as its his personal eyewitness account and attachment with the Boat tends to outweigh someone writing a History of the events from a few thousand miles away from secondhand information.

David;
What is Tuggles version? I always thought the last anyone saw the 41 boat was on an Army truck and trailer headed to Lake Laneo(sp?). And that the boat was later destroyed to prevent capture from advancing Japanese forces(probably burned).

Hi Ted,;Thats basioly what happened Tuggles version just fills in some finer detail , this is taken from his account in George W. Smiths book MacArther's Escape.

The Boat was put on a trailer and towed over a mountainous trail with sharp turns and u bends. Tuggle "The boat never made it through. It got stuck in one of the bends and was blocking the road, we took everything usable off it. The Japanese eventually pushed the boat over the cliff to open the road."

He does not say that the Boat was burnt by either the American Army or the Japanese, something that would one think be added as he talks about removeing gear from the Boat. Also at this time destroying anything of use to the Japanese was high on the list

Another version I have found states that as they were making their way up the trail the Japanese met them and the Boat was riddeled with holes first by the Japanese shooting at the Americans, using the boat as cover then by the Americans, shooting at tha Japanese, as they used the boat to advance, the Boat then being pushed over the edge of the road by tthe Japanese as now she was blocking the road and had a large number of holes in her hull and was beyond salvage. Also in this version there is no mention of the Boat being burnt, not worth the effort when one just needs to push it over the edge to finish her off.

The reports of the Boat being burnt being used by those outside the operations area and those further down in history can be understood when the American Military at that time had the comand in place to all service persons

DONT LET ANY USABLE EQUIPEMENT FALL INTO ENEMY HANDS DESTROY IT FIRST.

Just as it is today.

So Ted thats what I have found while studying the story of Ron 3, just think what might be posible and what must still be out there?

David;
That is very interesting, maybe her remains are still there, too bad the current state of the area isn't a little more tourist friendly.
Take care,

Ted,
I agree, and all going well I may one day get to follow the old WW11 road and do a little exploring as I like to do.

By the way how is the PT 48 restoration going have not heard about her lately. As a 77' boat she holds a special interest for me as you can tell !

Any news would be welcome.

David

The News on PT-48 is not good News, as nothing is being done at this point. I would suggest that money is a very large issue here, but thankfully the boat is covered and protected. No work has been planned for 2011 that I know of..................
