I know we've been lucky to get the inside head's up on a lot of the PT book projects here but I hadn't heard of this two volume set:

http://www.amazon.com/Beachheads-Secured-History-Torpedo-1939-August/dp/1450008364/ref=sr_1_41?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1292189176&sr=1-41

Am I just out of the loop or is this news to the gang here? Not a very good sales pitch on the Amazon page; I know nothing more about the book other than the title and a write up on the author.

This one is a shocker to me. Never even knew anything about this book or the Author. Thanks for the heads up Jim.

I've never heard anything about this set, either. Exlibris is a self-publishing company, so it's likely that there was little or no peer review. The price is certainly inexpensive for 1000+ pages. The cover is very odd - looks like a portion of a mediocre ship model of some type. Might be worth getting one volume and seeing what's there.

Hi Guys,
I found this when I googled Harold Barbin:

HAROLD L. BARBIN Obituary(Archived)
Published in Houston Chronicle on March 21, 2010
First 25 of 166 words: HAROLD L. BARBIN, CMSGT Retired, 84, he was born Ocober 23, 1925 in Beaumont, TX, he died Friday, March 19, 2010 in Houston, TX.
I read also that his wife, Mavis, died previously. So this book must have been self published by his Next of Kin. I agree with you Al. The cover photo is very strange, it does not look quite like a PT Boat! It partially resembles part of the aft day room on an 80 foot Elco, but not really. I wonder what it is? Let us know what the book looks like inside. Thanks Jerry

the cover sort of reminds me of a ship more than anything, maybe its the aft portion of some late or post war large boats, like the Japanese PT 815, or post war English or German boat.
Take care,

Weren't their some larger boats at the beginning of the war that carried torpedo tubes. Maybe like a Sub Chaser or Patrol Craft, something like that, or even the early Destroyers use to have.

Silly me, If I had done a little searching like I just finished the cover is clearly of PT-15, Japanese Torpedo Boat PT-15 model. You can go to this place and look at several photos of the model - - -

aeroscale.co.uk

or do a image searcher for Japanese Torpedo Boat PT-15

Hadly,
Good detective work! Thats kind of Ironic using a photo of a model of a Japanese PT Boat on the cover of a book about US PT Boats! Now thats funny right there, I dont care who you are! Jerry

Yup, a post-war design for the JMSDF. This doesn't give me a warm fuzzy about the book[:-unhappy-:] We'll see soon.

I think they should have put a photo of a nice Higgins PT Boat like this one on the cover....then it would sell better for sure! Jerry

Looking forward to your review Al. I ordered some photoetch from White Ensign Models that was shipped on 12/6 and it hasn't arrived yet. If you find your shipment maybe there's hope for mine too! Anyway, looking forward to seeing your review.

When I did some searching on the PT-15 I came across the Tamiya kit. Eduard makes a nice photoetch set for it. It builds into a very nice model.

Well, Amazon claims they sent it, FedEx claims they delivered it to the US Post Office in Bangor, USPS claims they don't have a record of it being scanned in. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!

I ordered an MAS 568 kit from WEM about a week later and they shipped it on 12/15. Haven't seen it either. Usually, their service is great. I emailed John and he said there was a snow storm over there that day (1/2") and it's probably stuck in the back of a warehouse at the airport. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh, again!

I've (hopefully) got a copy of V.I on the way from Amazon as well. Looking inside the cover on the Amazon website, it seems to be a lot of personal narrative and minuta on base development, etc. with some pretty specific criticisms of "wrong information" in some of the existing works like AT CLOSE QUARTERS.

Based on your observations, I took a "look inside" on the Amazon site, too. I'm intrigued!!!! On the surface, it looks like the author did a lot of primary research. The text as presented seems like a confusing collection of notes rather than a narrative; will have to see what the actual book looks like. I'm very curious to see what his comments on the boats themselves are like.

Well, the replacement copy arrived. I'm dumbfounded. I've never seen a mess like this in my life!! [:-confused2-:]
This is not a book. It is a mass of absolutely confusing notes, paragraphs, charts, maps, letters, etc., jumbled together and bound, 500+ pages. I'm sure there's some useful information somewhere in there, but it would take months to decipher. [:-question-:]

I'm with you, Al! After leafing through Vol I and spot-reading some pages, it would appear to be meticulously researched, but the veracity of the content is gonna be a mess to decipher. There are probably some real nuggets of info in there - the trick is going to be to get a grip on the whole thing.

Hi everyone,
My vol. I & II of Beachheads Secured arrived two days ago. What a mess! I agree 100% with what Al Ross and Will Day said on the
message board. "It is a confusing collection of nates" about PT boat bases. The English and format are so bad, I failed to understand the
many tables and maps and everything else. There might be some jems in the 1000 pages of information, however, to dig them out is like finding gold in your back yard. What a waste of money and I am stupid enough to ordered two volumes.
