http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=1921
Hi gang,
Here are some photos I scanned then posted to our Photobucket account of one of our vets who has taken his last patrol, Bob Hostetter. He was XO on PT344 in RON25 at Morotai and on PT595 of RON40 at Samar. I thought it was significant this is a photo of the Italieri Model PT Boat. Some are pretty interesting. Jerry

Thanks for posting those great photos, Jerry.
It's always fascinating to see the life the guys lived on the boats in photos, and there's lots of excellent PT detail in some of them, such as that different-looking "secondary" searchlight on the 344. I've never seen one like that before!

Hey Jerry, really nice photos.
What is the significance of numerals on the radar domes, at least I guess that's what they are ?
Does it have to do with a certain Ron ?

Hi Steve!
I have no idea? Maybe Frank Andruss or Ted may know? Sorry I just scanned them I was unable to ask Bob before he passed away about any of these pictures. Jerry

Steve and Jerry;
Just using photos of various RONS in the warzone as a reference, this was just a quick ID of a particular boat, I believe this practice started at Mios Woendi , simply because of the large number of boats there. However, in the sixth photo you can see one boat has a 5 on the radome(this could be PT 345, just guess), and another with the roman numeral lll, this is the first time I have seen a roman numeral used(maybe it is PT 343 )but as I also said this was just used for quick visual reference as the guys were heading down the pier towards their respective boats/or a "borrowed" boat for the nights patrol, because their regular boat was OOC/NMC, for that night.
Take care,
TED

From what I remember the guys telling me, some of them painted a certain number on the Radar Dome for easy identification, as at times many boats were lashed together. As you can see from that one photo, many boats are in one place, and seeing a number that represented your boat was a quick fix to find your boat quickly, I have not seen the roman numerals used before.....

I have several photos of boat numbers, either full or partial, painted on the radar domes, all with large groups of nested boats...
