» Topic: Higgins portholes
http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=1906

I thought that I would start a new topic on this subject. It was just mentioned in another. From the photos that I have seen, it appears that most or all of Ron 22 boats had portholes. They are all in the same locations. So wouldnt it make sense that they were installed at the higgins plant?

Bob;
Great photos!!! But, from what I have seen PT 305 had the most portholes in RON 22, using your #1 photo of 305 as an example, PT 308 never had the forward ones, it only had below the turrets and the engine room ones as seen in the previous post. When I was on her at Franklin Timmons Boat Yard back in 1986-88, the 4 holes were sill there. I have yet to see a photo of PT 309 with portholes, I stand by Walt Pirog's statement who was an original crew member on 308, "They were installed by second crew". There are at least a hundred photos of RON 22(which arrived in the Med on 21 April 1944, and first got to Bastia in May 1944) boats at Bastia and La Maddelena where most of the boats have no portholes.This was mid 1944, when they moved to Leghorn(10 Oct 1944) and St. Maxime, San Tropez, France(23 Aug 1944), you start to see them in photos. 28/29 April 1945 was the last patrol for RON 22 boats.
Take care,

Ted, Do you have any other pics of the boats with portholes?

Thanks

If you look real close at this pic of the 302, it sure looks like there may be a porthole here. It is in the exact same location in the forward rack in the crews quarters.

Bob;
I have just looked at photos of 308 and in this photo she only has the forward portholes. Most of the photos I have don't show any portholes on any of the boats, and my photos are from the Bastia time frame(June-Aug 1944).
I have the same RON 22 Commissioning photo of 302, only clearer and in better detail, she has no portholes visible. I also have a photo of PT 302 underway on Lake Pontchartrain early spring 1944, prior to their deployment to Med, no portholes. I also have a photo of your PT 305 underway in the Med in summer 1944, with no portholes, would you like it?
Take care,
