I was watching the History Channel (Modern Marvels) last night and they were doing a special on chrome. They showed a hot rod with a Packard engine. The owner stated the engine came from a 1943 PT boat. They also showed various old hood ornaments and one was a PT boat Packard put on their cars.

I found some pictures of the Packard powered hot rod, attached below. Although it's a questionable use of such an engine, to me anyway, at least it does provide an opportunity for the public to hear an M2500 run. The video at this link starts with a slide show and ends with a static run of the engine. Glorious noise, even the starter motor grinding away is enjoyable!

The only legitimate use of a Packard in a 'car' would have been at the Bonneville Salt Flats up to the 1960's when Rolls Royce and Allison V-12s were still used. But I'm not aware of an M2500 ever being used there. A spritual successor might be the Detroit Diesel V-16 tugboat engine that powers Joint Venture, a 228 mph full-bodied semi tractor. The two videos at this link have the V-16 in a static run (upper video) and at full speed (lower video). I've seen Joint Venture run several times, the noise level is painful, equivalent to Top Fuel dragsters, and it ends with the biggest parachute you've ever seen. Wonder what an M2500 with way too much boost would sound like? The old man never made it to Bonneville with me but he loved the noise in my Joint Venture videos. Guess what got him hooked on that kind of noise?
