All,

Yesterday, Mr. Ross stated this:

If a reviewer points out multiple errors in the published work and can support those observations with defensible data (photos, primary documentation, factory/official drawings, etc.), any resulting “damage” to an author’s reputation is the fault of the author for not ensuring the accuracy of his/her work. For example, the PT book states that Higgins boats from 197 on left the factory fitted with the MK13 torpedoes. Photos contradicting this statement are in, among others, Garth’s previous PT monograph published by Squadron , Victor Chun’s book, and in At Close Quarters, so he clearly had access to information that contradicted this statement; yet, he wrote what he did. From whence comes the “damage”?

To me, that says that he doesn't think I checked my sources or my own work: I do and I have, especially more so in the wake of his 'uncredited paraphrasing' remark regarding my SC book - which was a book that I put my heart and soul into to make it as accurate as I could ... I check myself multiple times just so that Mr. Ross could never do that to me again ...

And, to support my argument people; I'd like to point something out to all of you just so all of you will understand that I am doing my best for you; I am trying to write a book on the Italian MAS boats of WW2 and in my quest to be as accurate as I possibly can, recently, I sent what text I have to two gentlemen to verify my facts and research on the book because I want it to be accurate. One gentleman is the Naval Attache at the Italian Embassy, and the other one is an author who is well versed in MAS boats, and this is an excerpt from a recent email from that author:

" ...Otherwise you have a lot of detail and seem to have closely researched your subject..."

So, as you can see people, I am mindful of accuracy, I am mindful about getting my facts straight and I do check my sources, often with experts who are far more knowledgable than I am and I do take what they impart to me to heart ..........

Garth

I really do not think you need to do any damage control on this issue. Why you continue to bring up the subject is beyond me. You are a well known Author that has put together a string of very well recepted books over the years. In my opinion, you are just stringing this out for really no reason. We get it Garth, we know about the reviews you were given by Al Ross, and as I said before in my earlier post, "People will still purchase your book". Because of this recent review, do you think I will not buy the book for my own viewing? Of course I will. This is one Man's view on your work and you are becoming obsessed with it. Sometimes Garth, silence is a better choice of weapon....................

And, by the same token Frank, defending oneself is good as well, especially when part of the criticism was done in a personal manner as this was ... and to drive it home too.

His comments cannot be ignored Frank. If he was a layperson, yes, but there are people out there who regard him as the HOLY GRAILLE of experts on these vessels, I know ... I used to be one of them.

I just think you are hurting yourself by keeping this up. Again this is only one Man's thoughts (mine). Let it go and move on..............

I'm done anyway.

And, once again, I'm contemplating stopping writing altogether.

Obviously, I'm not well suited to do it.
