http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=1633

Hi all,
Can anyone identify what this is? I've never seen it on a PT Boat or anything else for that matter. It doesn't seem to be a jackstaf? Any ideas?
Thanks/Dave

David,

If you look on the port side there appears to be a life line stanchion symetrical to your mystery object. I would assume the post is the starboard life line stanchion. A crew member could have hung a wet sea bag, small drag anchor or whatever on the lifeline. It is really hard to tell but I do not think it is any type of fixture of consequence.

But it is a great photograph that I have not seen before. Can you post it again without the anotations?

Greetings,
I thought that at first too. But if you look between it and the seated sailor you'll see the stanchion on the other side. This one seems to be just to the right of the smoke generator. I've seen photos of boats with a second jack staff but this one seems more vertical and it's got that whatever it is on top of it. You may be right, it may just be a sea bag.

The photo came from a web site called toonsatwar at the following link. I found the 524 post under older posts. The person posting this item, Disney Dave (a.k.a. DD) said they had over 150 photos that they got from a crew member. I would love to see these photos. I'm going to try and reach out to him and see if he can share some of these photos with us.

But please check out his site and there's some history about the boat there. It's my leading candidate for my 1/35 Italeri build.

David,

My read on the other post is the staff for the ensign. It appear at an angle and a half post, which the ensign staff was. The other half slipped in with the flag while the boat was moored. I still think the post with the object is the second stanchion. It is a tough read as the 2D photo provides some optical illusions. Maybe with a better resolution scan of the original you could zoom in on the object, who knows.

Regardless a great photograph. It is always nice to see fresh material rather than the usual fare we have seen for 50 years.

I dunno, guys. whatever the object is, it looks too symetrical to be just draped there.

I believe the 524 was Walt Kundis's boat, and if I'm not mistaken, he is still with us.

Maybe Walt can shed some light on what the object might have been...

I tried to clean the photo up with NikonWorks. At super magnification, it looks like the position of the mystery object is indeed where the starboard stanchion would be and the base looks right, but the vertical shaft itself looks thicker than the portside stanchion.

Go figure.

Greetings,
Thanks for looking at it guys. It looks like it's going through the deck right next to the smoke generator which makes me think that it's not the stanchion. I've been wrong before though. It would be great if we could find DD (a.k.a. Disney Dave) who has a boat load of photos of this boat. Sorry about that very weak pun.

This is indeed Walt Kundis' boat. I don't recall seeing him posting here. Does anyone know how to reach him?

Thanks everyone!
Dave

I tried to blow the object up, but little can be gained from this. It does appear to be something drapped over that Stantion post, simular to a cover of sorts for one of the guns, but this is streching it a bit..........

David,
Another fellow named David did an interview with Walt Kundis and put up a blog about it. Check out http://ptboats.blogspot.com/ for his contact info.

In answer to Dave's question about Mr. Kundis posting here, yes, I do believe I've seen a post or two from him in the past...

Here is an enlarged and somewhat enhanced photo of the mysterious objects, well, mysterious for now. If you note there is another, framed devised (part of it could be the railing on the 40mm) on the port side appears to be exactly opposite of the item on the starboard side. Both items have a substantial base.

That object on the starboard side sort of looks like a mooring buoy float...

Hey Drew,
Doesn't it! I wonder if they just stuck something like that into the jack staff bracket?

Drew: That is as good a guess as any, and better than most. The thing DOES look too symetrical to just be draped...

PT Boaters;
I was looking at this mystery object and thought it resembles something else I have seen. The 40mm Bofors cannon has a sheet metal cover that goes over the auto loader pawls to keep sea spray or moisture out of the guns internal feed mechanism. I am unsure why they would do this, but perhaps the object is the cover hung over the stanchion? Also, from Dicks previous enlargement the other square frame like object I think is the rear railings for the 40mm cannon on bacxk of the loaders platform. The 40mm is swung over to the Starboard side, so its rear end would be in the right place to expose this square frame object. Here is a photo of the cover i am talking about. Jerry PT658 Portland

Dave, I think that what looks like the bottom of the post next to the smoke generator is actually the rear bracket for the smoke generator.

My guess would be with Drew, a buoy.

It is a standard issue drag anchor buoy. in areas where there is no area to tie up to a tender or pierr you have to drop your anchor and its a pain to always drop your anchor so you attach it to the anchor bouy and then you always know where your anchor is . Walt Kundis

Thank you for clearing up the mystery Walt! I very much appreciate that.

By chance do you have any other pictures of the 524 boat? I've tried reaching out to David (a.k.a. Disney Dave) but he has not written back. I'm planning on building the 524 boat and any references would be very helpful. I would be happy to pay for any mailing or processing.

Thanks so much for your time and service.

Hey Dave

My dad was in RON 36, mostly the 525 boat. I have a few obscure shots of the boats nested and on the tender coming over. Also base shots and crew.
You're welcome to them.

Gary was kind enough to share some photos with me and guess what, a nice shot of the standard issue drag anchor buoy. Some nice detail on this one. Thanks again Gary!
