http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=1625

I have in my collection a few of the 1960's HAWK model PT BOATS. I understand that TESTORS had come out with that same kit, which I think is 1/200 scale. That would make the boat a little over 5 inches long. I would love to purchase a bunch of them, for a future project. I do not see where they are for sale. Does anyone have a source or hobby store that carries the boats?

Also, I am looking for plans for building a 1/48 scale scratch built PT-10. Does anyone have any plans I can borrow, or maybe a copy of those plans. I think the boats were that light gray, dark gray color out of the Factory, pretty much the same as the colors we used on the CRANE PROJECT. Thanks guys......................

Garth
The cheapest I could find was $6.99 per boat, which I think is a bit out of line. Many others I visited do not have them, or are out of stock. I could not even find them on the TESTORS WEB SITE. One Company was selling them for $4.50, but discontinued the line altogether.........

70' plans are in ACF V2. Just copy and enlarge them. Also, I just sent Dick the microfilm reels for the 70' boats, so they'll be on DVD at some point.

In all honesty?

$6.99 for that kit? Is not all that bad ...

You are probably right, but I still live in the age of the 75 cent models, and the 10 cent per bottle Testors paint. Sometimes because I do very little shopping, prices seem high to me, I guess..............

Ahoy there. Frank A.

Because I use mostly Folk Art, Delta Creme Coat and similar acrylics for my figures and most other painting, I now live in the era of $1.00 per 2 ounces bottles of paints. These paints have fine enough pigments that it is possible to paint details on the faces of even 25 mm figures.

I know a few guys that use the method of paint you describe. I guess what works best for the modeler (if successful) is the way to go.

GARTH- Your still a few years behind me, but I am sure you remember the old prices for model kits. A case of boats, heck what would I do with the all..............

Wow, you guys must be older than dirt! I remember cheaper prices for models and paint but really? 10c for a bottle of Testors Paint? That must be way before my time.. I got ripped off! I love ribbing you Frank! Good luck with your new website, it really is awesome! Jerry

Jerry

I am starting to feel older than dirt. In my hometown, we used to have a ZAYRE DEPARTMENT STORE. I used to walk down the hill every Friday night with my buddies and grab models and paints from the discount bin. I can remember buying the Revell PT-109 for 50 cents. They had a large bin filled with TESTORS paints and a sign that read .10 cents for Model paint.

This would have been around 1967-69. I would have been ten or twelve years old. Boy those were the days. We would follow that up with a trip to the 5 and dime store, sit at the counter and buy a Milk Shake. Walk back home, which was a good 3 miles. No worries in those days. By te prices sure went up over the years. WILL DAY probably remembers when the had paper models (ha, ha).........

OH MY GOD, ... ZAYER's ............. I remember that store in Hyannis ... buying shoes, new pants, new shirts and sweaters there before we came home from vacation before the new school year. I'd buy HOT WHEELS cars and G.I. JOE stuff there too.

OK OK I guess I remember those days, I was 6 or 7 in 1968. I remember going to Kreske's Dept Store (or is it Kresge?) before they renamed it to become K-Mart. They had models there too. I guess I shouldn't be calling you older than dirt if that is only 3-4 years older than me! Jerry

You guys remember those days huh? In 1968 Jerry I was 11. You would have not been allowed to hang with us (ha, ha.) My friend Bobby Scoville's Kid brother used to follow us, and we would chase him to make him go home. One day he followed us to Zayre's and we had to keep him with us. Remember the old Batman, Superman, Lost In Space, models. Or how about the T-Rex model. Oh Boy, I could go on and on............

I had contacted TESTORS main Company to see if they had any these boats in stock. According to them, this model has been discontinued, and several of the hobby shops I contacted do not have them anymore. If anyone has a source for me on these 1/200 models, let me know because I would like to purchase no less than 6..................

Hey Guys-

It's been a while since I've been on the board, so I thought I'd chime in.

Waaaay back in the mid '60's I remember when I was into controline model airplanes. Remember, we used to call them "bricks on a string"? I must have had a dozen or so .049 Cox model airplane engines back then. They were only like $4.00 a piece. I built every single Scientific airplane model kit that Fishkin Brother's Hobby store carried. Those kits were only a buck and a half a kit back then. Do you guys remember the model airplane dope and rice paper over balsa. Yeah man, that was modeling back then.

Recently, I went on e-bay looking for some of the old controlline stuff from my youth. Those old Scientific kits are like gold now and a .049 airplane engine in top notch shape goes for $30.00. It's just a sign of the times guys!

I think about all those discount bins that carried every darn WII airplane. Some were discounted to 50 cents, I mean we are talking new kits, sealed kits. Today, your lucky to get one for under $20.00. I remember buying an Aircraft Carrier (although I do not remember which one), that thing had to be 20 or more inches long. I paid $1.00 for it at the HOBBY SHOP, which had just opened up in our home town. The guy at the counter said it was a discontinued Kit. They had everything, but as I remember they were not in business very long, may 4 years or so.............

Gee Frank, you made me get out my old Tee Dee engine to look at it... seems like it would still run. I have several other .049's buried somewhere. I remember an Indy .049 tether car I got as a present that would run fine on the back patio but never ever would run at the parking lot.

I too built the stick and tissue planes. What a pain the tissue skinning could be. Later on silkspan was a comparative joy to work with.

I turned 12 in 68 and beat my Dad in a game of bowling. A standing promise was that he would give me his ball if I ever beat him and I traded it back for an Estes rocket starter kit. That was great fun and always gathered a crowd.

I'd buy any model kit I could afford that had an electric motor or working parts like steering. My building skills were limited though. I thought the Big Daddy Roth Rat Fink cars were the cat's butt but they lost something in my hands. Maybe it was the lack of paint.

I still have a metal Hubley Duesenberg kit from decades ago with only the chassis built. One day I'll dust it off

Now that I have my juices flowing, I went in the basement, and cheked out my old model box. I have several Kits inside never even opened. I have 1/48 SBD DAUNTLESS BOMBER, which comes with the LSO OFFICER, BOMB CART, some BOMBS. Really cool. I haven't looked at this stuff in years, and pretty much forgot what I have in there. I even have a nice 1/300 DE-589, USS TINSMAN, Destroyer Excourt. This is an old Lindberg Kit.

The boxes are in great shape too. I doubt I will ever build these old kits but they are fun to remember when. I bet I had these things since I was 14 years old. Heck, I even found my old TRANSISTER RADIO. Later Iam going to see if it still works.........

Hey Jeff-

I was poking around on e-bay the other night looking for some odd and old kits, and son-of-a-gun, somebody is selling a bunch of the old Revell Big Daddy Roth Rat Fink kits from the '60's. He had Mother's Worry, Beatnik Bandit and a bunch of others. I know I built them all. There is Surfer Dude that I remember building for my cousin back then. I added a blown Hemi on the front of the surf board. It came out pretty neat!

I do wish that Revell would re-issue some of those old classic kits. I know that Lindberg is always re-issuing their old kits all the time.

I just found my old Fox .35 stunt motor in an old sock in my tool box the other day. It still has the old aluminum spinner and prop on it. I flipped the prop and it still has terrific compression. Hummmm, I just may have to build me another stunter some day. Don't know if I can spin around and around like I was when I was a kid anymore, even with a set of new knees that is! Just a thought!

Thanks for the memories Guys!

Frank A.- I'll do some checking for those Testor's PT's at my local IPMS show. They are going to have a ton of vendors there!

This is the only likely place I found Frank, $5.59:
http://www.sandsdistributors.net/products/MPB/boats.html

One review site mentioned that he saw them selling for $30... for the original Hawk kit not the Testors re-release.

Frank R, we would have had fun together as kids. I have a McCoy .29 around somewheres... I remember the 1st time with non-Cox powered u-control. I got so dizzy I stumbled and hit the bag of starting supplies. It came across and whizzed close by me until it hit the end of the lines then wham into the ground. Balsa and silkspan sure don't take the hits like the Cox jobs. The worst part was that my friend had "borrowed" it from his Dad. I don't remember if I knew that before the wreck or not but the plane was trash and we got in a lot of trouble.

Take care,

Cool Ted, you can play with Frank and me! Got any Missile Mist?

That's a lot of snow man... haven't seen that stuff in a long time. I'd miss it if I were still young.

Some of my best memories as a kid are from Fairfax. What beautiful country, We'd hike all day following creeks, clambering over rock outcrops. Now I live in the middle of a 100 mile long city, bah.

I can remember putting model planes together (1965) and taking them outside to play with. To add realisim to my planes, I would light a wing tip on fire, or the engine and fly the thing around, pretending it was hit in Combat. Remember the sound plastic used to make when it was on fire and dripping. It was pretty cool, although I did get burned a few times, and that hurt like hell.

I wish I had stuck with the building of models, and instead of having my friends build Museum Models for me, I could do it myself..........

Hey Jeff D.-

There is a old controlline club here in Jacksonville Florida called "THE FLYING REBELS" and they fly controlline almost every Saturday at an old Navy airstrip on the westside of the city. I'd love to get back into flying again. I used to fly slow combat and carrier, which was my biggest kick way back then. Controline is making it's way back. What was once old is new again!

I used to fly a old Sterling F4U Corsair with a hot Fox .40. I only flew with MISSLE MIST. It was the best model airplane fuel way back then. I remember my Mom hated when my jeans came to the laundry bin shrinking of Missle Mist. That stuff stuck with you for a few weeks - on your hands, clothes, whatever. Yeah man- those WERE the days!

Thanks for the memories, like Bob Hope always said!

Frank,

I checked my local high-end hobby shop for the Testor's boats for you last Friday -- sorry, no luck.

Hopefully, they'll reissue them in the future. Other than the rather poorly-realized twin-.50 turrets/guns, lack of gun depression rails and "ring" detail on the torpedo tubes, they're pretty accurate and could be built into really nice-looking models by a skilled modeler...

I can envision a neat-looking Tulagi, Rendova, or New Guinea-era diorama of a "nest" of them, done up in the different-shades of solid grays and greens of the early days (and maybe the muted zebra-stripes, too Frank R.)...

Although right in the middle of the PT-374 project, I have been looking ahead to my next project. I have three things in my head:

1. Scratch built 1/48 scale PT-10
2. Testors PT's along side a Tender
3. Testors PT's along side a Destroyer
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, as the PT-374 project is the most important item on my plate, I just love the idea of two PT BOATS tied up to a destroyer begging food. At 51/4 inches long, I think the Destroyer might be something like 20 inches long. These Testors Kits claim to be 1/200 scale, but I think that is incorrect. If I can secure a few of them, I can invision this project. Now, along those lines, I never had PT-10 in my Exhibit, except for photographs. Stan Pienkowski will scratch build one for me at some point, so I have to decide. But right now, I am too excited about our 374 project, which continues to move forward. I hope to have a few more photo's for you guys in short order.............

I think its more like 1/84 or some crazy thing like that. I see there is one on EBAY for sale. I will try to obtain this one for my future project and keep my eyes open. If you guys find any, please let me know, also I need an American Destroyer that will match up to these boats. I have no clue if there are any around............

If the model is 5.25" long, then it is in approximately 1/180 scale (80/180*12=5.28). the closest standard ship model scale to this is 1/192 (1/16"=1'). Iron Shipwright did/does offer a resin FLETCHER in this scale. BlueJacket offers wooden FLETCHER (square bridge) and JOHN C. BUTLER (DE339) class kits in this scale.

The model is more like 1/187 scale. The box says 1/200, and the directions are different as well. I think the boat is roughly 5/78 long...................

If you are really in a pinch, you might consider vacuum forming them using one of your kits as a master. Can't wait to see the finished product.
