http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=1560

Hey Guys,

Does anyone have any information onthe first PT Boat patch - the one based on the Disney-designed insignia?

I have the info on the block letter PT patch and the later one. But nothing on the first one. I know it was unofficial but tolerated.

I'm trying to figure out when it started to show up. I've search but so far have come up blank.

Thanks.

Charlie

Thanks. Good info. But what I was looking for, and wasn't too clear in my first message, was when did PT boaters first start wearing the "unofficial" Mosquito patch on their uniforms.

Since it wasn't official, there is no documentation on it except to say stop wearing it when the PT mark came out.

Thanks.

I forgot to put the Photo title Both photos are the same one is just a close up of the PT patch.

This is MTB Squadron One Lt. Westholm and Crew and I am 99% sure it is Miami shakedown.

Don

Thanks for the reply. I have several of the earlier design MTB Patches, which I think was started by Lt, Caldwell. If memory serves me right, he had contacted Walt Disney about doing a patch for the PT BOAT NAVY, hence the Mosquito, riding the Torpedo. By the way, does anyone have any idea the type of Jacket the guys are wearing in this photo. I am sure they have a Navy designation. I would love to make up this set up, for a future Exhibit on a full maniquinn.............

By the way, I know the goggles are the AN-6530. worn by the Fighter Guys. The jackets could be the Navy Grey ones, which fetch a ton of money. The cloth hats, I have been looking for but have had no luck, because they do not have the part on the back that hold the Ear pieces for the radio. I think Alan Lawrence, who now and then visits this board once showed me a picture of the head gear. I could be wrong......

Charlie;
As Don and Frank have shown the patch was a very early item, I also have just finished viewing Tape V4, and the film shows most of RON 2 wearing the patch on their dress blue jumpers, left upper chest in Miami Spring 1941. So I would agree with Frank, if Caldwell had it designed, Fall 1940-Spring 1941 is a good guess.

Don, what number boat was Westy on in these photos?

Frank,
The headgear was the same as worn by Navy flight deck handlers, and is probably Navy Blue. The jackets appear to be Navy Blue also, since Jack Searles was on this trip as Skipper of PT 15, give him a call, maybe he remembers.
Take care,
TED

Excellent! I've never seen that picture before. Didn't realize the patch was used that early.

The jacket is the standard blue winter jacket that came out in (I believe) 1939. It was modified in 1943 by replacing the zipper with clips but was susperceeded by the N-1 jacket in 1943. They are somewhat hard to find and are somewhat expensive. One sold on ebay recently for $669, I've seen them go higher.

At this time, the navy wasn't big into letter-number designations on their uniform items. Didn't really start until 1943. so there isn't an N-?? type designation for this jacket

Officially, the googles were not designated as the AN-6530 til 1943 (the AN stands for Army-Navy), although it was pretty much the same design as the earlier ones (I think the AAF called them B-7.)

The hats (officially helmets) they are wearing appear to be the standard winter helmet, also made of the blue jungle cloth that the jackets were made of. You can tell by the big piece of cloth that hangs over the neck. The ones the flight deck crews wore were a light-weight cloth and didn't have the neck protector. The winter helmet was lined to keep your head warm. I'd have to get a closer better view but they may also be wearing the winter bib-pants that went with the winter clothing set. It looks like there are straps around the ankles but need a better view. This whole set had a wool lining. You can find the hats and the trousers for this set easily but like I said, the jacket is a bit tough.

Hello Ted:
Regarding your question:
Don, what number boat was Westy on in these photos?

The information I included in the post is all the history I currently have for this photo.

Hey Charlie,
I found these over the last few years. One is the name of the actual artist who designed the Mosquito on a torpedo logo. Jerry

Photo of Roy Williams, the Designer of the logo at Disney Studios?

Also the website "Toons at War" http://www.ww2homefront.com/junkie8.html has the following date associated with the Mosquito Logo

"Disney artists designed combat insignia for all branches of the U.S. military and that of her Allies. During a five-year period, Studio artists designed an estimated eleven hundred insignia. Despite costing an average $25 each to produce, all of the artwork was donated.

The first request for a Disney-designed insignia came in 1933 when Walt received a request from a Naval Reserve squadron stationed at Floyd Bennett Field in New York. Disney gave his permission and artists created an emblem that featured Mickey Mouse astride a diving bird.

The second request came in June 1939. A Naval Reserve Aviation Cadet wrote Walt Disney requesting an insignia for the “Fighting Seven” Naval Air Squadron, based aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp. The job was assigned to artist Henry “Hank” Porter, who designed an insignia featuring an angry wasp with boxing gloves.

The next request came in March 1940. A Naval Operations Officer asked for an emblem representing the American “Mosquito Fleet” of torpedo boats. The Disney design featured a nasty looking mosquito flying with a torpedo clutched between his legs. "

I hope this is helpful! Jerry

Jerry
A little off the subject but when I saw the picture of Roy Williams that designed the original logo I thought he looked familiar. He was also one of the adults featured in the original Mickey Mouse Club. Short bio of him here.
