was wondering how much the Elco boats cost to build..did the navy get a discount for ordering so many? was curious...my uncle sereved on a pt late in the war in san francisco....he said they used it to go back and forth from Mare Island to San Fran .

Somewhere I had heard the figure between $150,000 and $165,000 per boat, but as I do not have the exact figure in front in front of me, I may not be exact. I think I am close though..............

I think you are looking at well over 3 million to do one from scratch. Now that is just an educated guess. I am not sure if anyone has actually priced one out. I know over the years I ave heard about some who had wanted to do one, but as far as I know, nothing ever materialized.........

We were reminded many times that a PT cost $250,000. I never saw that in print and PT information during the war was classified secret. In those days that price was exceedingly high and was meant to impress us. However PTs were classed as expendible, not capital. We were inventory and total cost was caslculated on different criteria than capital ships. (as you know, we were double classed, commissioned warships and "boats" but not classed as watercraft).

We need Jerry Gilmartin to chime in on some of the costs involved with the restoration of PT658. It has to be well over a million even with all the volunteer help and equipment and mooring, etc and ect donations.

Hey guys,
I asked our Treasurer Dick Lowe and he said that since 1994 we (Save the PT Boat PT658) have spent close to $500,000 rebuilding and restoring PT658. That is on a shoestring budget also. Every penny of that amount was pretty much donated. Right now we are trying to raise about $250,000 to have the hull planking between the chine and the keel replaced for the entire length of the boat per the recommendations of our latest Marine Survey Report. Just last week we purchased 25 5x10 foot sheets of 3/4" 13 layer no-void Mahogany Marine Plywood to be used in the restoration of the deck for $340 a sheet. (25x$340) We are in the market to purchase a large amount ( about 2000 board feet) of 3/4" mahogany planking (selling between $3.70 to $5.00/boardfoot todays prices) in the near future. Not to mention at least 200 gallons of Clear Pentrating Epoxy Sealant (CPES) and thousands of bronze screws etc. I think the PT 617 Elco boat in Fall River had about $700,000 spent back in the 1980's to restore her.
