Navy Shore Patrol

Was the Navy Shore Patrol active in such areas as Taboga, or the Shakedown in Miami Florida. Were they present in all of the forward bases of the Pacific. If so, what was the normal dress for these guys. I have seen both the Navy Shore Patrol in Dress Whites, and Navy Blue Shirt and Dungarees. Would I be correct in saying they only wore the uniform in White, during the summer months and only on US Bases in the United States.

Toboga, maybe a very small unit, but I doubt it. However, in Balboa/Panama City yes, as well as the Atlantic side: Coco Solo, France Field, and the sub base, and most were supplied by the Fifteenth Naval District headquartered at Balboa.
Miami Shake down had them too as they were mentioned in Jack Searles book, I am sure Shakedown provide some guys, but these guys seemed to be supplied by the Sub Chaser School or 7th Naval District. uniform was white jumper/summer dress whites.

Frank: I only saw Shore Patrol in the U.S. and Hawaii. None in the Solomons or Philippines. One half of our crew went to Auckland N.Z. on R and R. They said they were S.P.'s there.

I have records indicating that PT tender Hilo supplied nightly crews ashore in Cairns as assigned by the NOIC, Cairns, for shore patrol duties- a contingency of about four or five and lead by a Lieut. who would otherwise served as OD on Hilo. Uniforms? I dunno.

Basically, there was a Shore Patrol just about everywhere there was a Navy base. It would have been part of the Base structure/organization. Now the size of the Base organization may have varied in size. In the Continental US and larger more permanent bases, there was a larger regular "permanant" contingent assigned as the Shore Patrol (a lot of civilian policemen who were drafted/enlisted were put in these positions).
All of these Shore Patrol contingents would have been augmented (as necessary) by local commands or ships. It was just a duty assignment for them. This included officers and enlisted men.
Uniforms for the SPs would have been what was prescribed for all sailors, CPOs and Officers. Would probably have worn an SP armband, a web belt (watch belt) and carried a nightstick.
Out in remote area bases (like the Pacific), they probably wore dungarees along with something that identified them as SP (as if the nightstick didn't give it away).

IN ORMOC, P.I. THERE WAS AN OFFICER THAT RODE AROUND IN A JEEP WITH CHROME BUMPERS.WE CALLED HIM"CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT"AS I THINMK HE ONLY PATROLLED AT NIGHT.I NEVER ACTUALLT SAW HIM AND DO NOT KNOW IF HE WORE A SHORE PATROL ARMBAND OR NOT. I ONLY AVOIDED HIM ONE NIGHT BY SWIMMING ACROSS THE RIVER/CANAL NEXT TO THE BASE.HE USUALLY STATIONED HIMSELF NEAR THE BRIDGE CROSSING IT.
