Hello fellas,

I was signed up on the 'old' board and just 're-upped' on this new one. I thought that might be a good idea so that I could say something if'n I wanted
instead of just reading along like I've been doing!

Thanks for the welcome. I enjoy reading all the posts and seeing the pictures some have posted. Not too many plank owners left anymore. I missed going to the reunion when it was in Spokane here a few years back and it sounds like the last one will be next year.

Dad made it to the Long Beach reunion way back when and enjoyed it very much but I think that was the only one he was able to go to. He and Boats kept in touch, more or less, for decades. He had a great deal of respect for Newberry.

I've made sure my two sons know about the PTs and I'll make sure the grand kids know also. The schools don't seem to teach much history these days so we have to fill in that part ourselves.

I think it's a good thing that you are teaching your children about the role the PT Boats, Bases, and Tenders played during WWII. I have spent a good deal of my adult life trying to educate people about the role the boats played during the War, and I can tell you, these children today have no clue. Not only are most of them blind to what a PT Boat was, but they are blind about WWII period. I have always thought it was important to teach the young children about WWII and the price these men made to keep us free, but I think the School system might have other ideas. If time is spent teaching about WWII, I can bet that it is not much time at all.

Children today spend little time reading anything like we did, and research in a Library is pretty much non exsistant. Most kids today jump on the computer, not to learn, but to play games, chat with friends, or jump on their facebook accounts. I believe you can learn a great deal through photographs and Video, which is why schools should incorporate as much actual photographs as possible, not to mention changing the History courses, to spend a few years on WWII. not just breeze through the period.

History tests consist of dates,places, and Generals, but the whole concept is just lost. Read a chapter or two, then take a test. Who really learns about the subject in this manner. Take the time to spend showing them through photographs. Show them what a PT Boat looks like, run a video on how they were built, have them listen to the engines. In my Exhibits, I have a large screen TV running a video on the boats throughout the whole day. You would not believe the interest the kids have when they can watch the boats being built, or running over the waves. All of a sudden, when the video is done, they have tons of questions. Well, I suppose I could go on and on, but in closing, keep up your attempts to teach the kids when they are young. I did it with my boys, and one of them has his own collection on the F4-U Corsair Fighter plane, and during Air Shows, dresses up as a fighter pilot, stands next to the plane and answers questions from visitors.

My Dad's going to try to make it to the final reunion. He lives in Arizona but is going to try. The last one we went to was when it was in Danvers, Ma. several years ago.
