BOOK REVIEW

I found a book titled "PT BOATS AT WAR" by MBI Publishing Co. Looks to be pretty informative and has some good photo's but I don't see anyone here refer to it. What are your opinions on this book. I noticed some of the info in this book doesn't match the info on the NavSource web site but figured NavSource has new updated info. Your thoughts................

Dan,
This is not a bad reference book, one of the better inexpensive references on PT Boats. As I recall there were some errors in the book which was a surprise given Norman Polmar was one of the authors. In my view it was worth the money to purchase.

Thanks Bill. I did a Google search on Normon Polmar, he seems to know a lot about the Navy.

Dan,
Polmar and Norman Friedman are the most published authors on US Navy ships and naval strategy over the past two decades. They tend to focus on blue water, large ships, so I was surprised when Polmar published a book on coastal craft.
When it comes to coastal craft of World War II John Lambert and Al Ross II produce the most researched work regarding the boat designs, British and American, respectively. L. C. Reynolds has done excellent work in documenting British MTB operations. Frank Andruss has started to produce some nice research, back filling areas not documented by others in the past. Current naval strategy for operations in narrow seas appears to be the domain of Milan Vego.
If you are interested in specific boat operations, NARA has all of the action reports and boat logs. Copies of which can be obtained from the Archives at the cost of the copies. These are very interesting reads as they give first hand views of activities shortly after they have ocurred.
