With all these great books on the Boats that are out there.Does anyone know anybody that would do one on the Bases, there must be heaps of content to fill a book easily.I suppose it wouldnt be as exciting as the Boat stories, but from an historical point of view, i think it would be an important record of the PT Boat Service.
What do you reckon?

Hello Michael-

YES, I totally agree with you that there should be a book all about the bases as well. I think that it would make for fascinating reading!

This book can combine both the boats at the front, along with the bases and tenders. I would like to do this as my second book, but we shall see...............

I FOUND OUT FROM EXPERIENCE THAT WRITING A BOOK IS A
LOT EASIER THAN FINDING A GOOD PUBLISHER.

Micheal;
I agree with all. The subject matter is so narrow, it has to be combined with the boats, otherwise the author will have written a white elephant. We on the board might buy a book about bases, but a very select group of customers will. Unfortunatly, today the author must consider who and what group he wants to cater to. I know there are labors of love out there, which if ever completed is exactly what I will do, but an author will loose his shirt in todays market. The subject matter must be broad enough to span a few subjects. Such as Boats, bases, guys. (ie: the boats would not run if there were no bases to support them, and the boats are just a stationary object, it takes the iron men to make them come to life, give them a personality, and make them run.).
Take care,
TED

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH VICTOR CHUN, WRITING A BOOK IS THE FUN PART, FINDING A PUBLISHER ISN'T. IN 1999 I WROTE A NOVEL ABOUT YOUNG AMERICANS FLYING FOR THE RAF IN WWII. AFTER SPENDING TWO YEARS LOOKING FOR A PUBLISHER, I SELF-PUBLISHED IT WHILE SOME OF MY TARGEY AUDIENCE WAS STILL AROUND TO READ IT. THEN I WROTE THE SEQUEL FOLLOWING THE MAIN CHARACTERS TO KOREA IN 1952, SELF- PUBLISHED THAT AS WELL. BOTH BOOKS WERE PRCIED TO SELL AT $8 AND BOTH BOOKS GOT GREAT REVIEWS FROM THE MEN WHO ACTUALLY FLEW THESE MISSIONS. THE BEST PART OF THE WHOLE PROCESS WAS MEETING AND CORRESPONDING WITH MEN LIKE GEN.ROBIN OLDS, COL DON LOPEZ AND CMDR GUY BORDELON.
SADLY, ALL THREE OF THESE FIGHTER ACES HAVE PASSED AWAY IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, AS HAVE SO MANY WWII VETS.
I'VE ACTUALLY OUTLINED AND RESEARCHED A WWII PT BOAT STORY , BUT I'M AFRAID WE'RE FAST LOSING OUR AUDIENCE. HARDLY A WEEK GOES BY WITHOUT A POSTING ABOUT ANOTHER PT VET HEADING OUT ON THEIR LAST PATROL.
AND TED WALTHER IS RIGHT, IN THE END, IT'S NOT ABOUT THE BASES OR THE BOATS. WE PRESERVE THE BOATS BECAUSE WE CAN'T PRESERVE THE MEN.

Thanks Fellas, all of this input will certainly not only help me to decide, but will help my publisher as well as to what book he is interested in seeing next..............

Hi Ross Fisher,
We seem to have similar experience in book publishing. After 2 years of seeking publishers, In around 1976, I too decided to self-publishing. I designed the cover, each pages, 4 fold out drawings. I name it AMERRICAN PT BOAT IN WW II. 1200 copies were printed by a local printer. With the help of my 8 years old daughter we sold them all in 2
years. That was a lot of boring works. In 1996, as a lark, I sent a copy
(79 pages) to Schiffer Publishing Ltd.. They wrote back within 2 weeks
and asked me to send them everything I have. They turned it into a 236 pages hard bound volume. Much to my disgust they illiminated the
fold out drawings due to cost. The rest is history.
When the first printing runs out I hope they will let me add more materials
and drawings to the second printing to further enhance the book.

VICTOR,
I LOVED YOUR PT BOOK, SOME REALLY GREAT IMAGES THERE. IF THE PUBLISHERS LET YOU ADD MORE MATERIAL TO THE SECOND PRINTING, I HOPE IT CAN BE SUPPLIED TO THE ' PT BOATS INC' BOOKSTORE . I LIKE TO HELP OUT ALYCE AND HER CREW IN GERMANTOWN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
E-MAIL ME YOUR SHIP-TO ADDRESS AND I 'LL SEND YOU A COPY OF MY FIRST NOVEL, "JUST LUCKY ENOUGH". FREE.....NO CHARGE...AND JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT THERE WAS NO FREE LUNCH.

Hey Victor,

I've got both incarnations of your book, the first one though is in bad shape, that's why I got the newer one ...

The fold out drawings are there, though not as fold-outs. I think the newer way is better. Not likely to get ripped ...

Hi Garth,
Since you like the new way of showing the drawing, I feel better. I
thought I was short changing the readers. I noticed my books in
the local library always with the fold out sheets missing.
