Frank, I received my book last week. Missed the price cut, but oh well.

Your compilation of photos is truly a significant contribution to the preservation of PT boat history, and with the inclusion of Higgins and Huckins is a remarkably comprehensive review of PT boat construction. Well done!

Please note that your Figure 87 (page 96) notation states Others in the photo are various members of Elco, wose names are unknown -- The man standing in the front row 2nd from right with arms crossed is Alfred Bill Fleming, Elco's noted naval architect who is generally credited with developing the graceful lines of the Elco 80'. Over his right shoulder, seated behind him, is Burns Darsie, who, among other accomplishments, was the inventor of the Thunderbolt gun system. I'll try to learn names of the others.

Building The PT Boats
-By-

Frank J. Andruss, Sr.

This is a new book relating to PT boats. It covers an aspect of the history of these boats that has not been really covered in the past.

The book covers the three firms in the construction of PT boats, Elco, Higgins and Huckins. It covers the histories of each company and some of the personalities as well. For instance, I never knew that Mr. Huckins made the claim that his design saved the PT boat program. I found that to be very interesting.

Additionally, I was not aware that John D. Bulkeley’s father was Elco’s oldest employee at seventy-six, for that matter, I was not aware that the senior Bulkeley was even alive at that time, so that was educational for me.

But, the main aspects of the book are the photos. All of them are germane to the topic of the book and show very interesting interior views of the boats. I liked seeing the engine room photos of the Huckins’ prototype PT boat. Photos of any of the Huckins boats are rare anyway.

The book does contain a few errors in its photo captions, but on the whole, it is a very good book and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in PT Boats.

It’s available through Nimble books at www.nimblebooks.com and through Amazon at www.amazon.com and other online sources.

Hey Frank, I will trade you your choice of cookbooks for a pt book!!! Hey, give it a thought. I have my barbecue book, my NASCAR tailgate book. My Tennessee Homestyle Cookbook, Texas, Georgia and a few kids books!

BY the way Amazon brings up two other authors named Kent Whitaker when you search my name. One is a baby doctor and the other wrote about a family murder. That guy was on Oprah. After her was on the show I saw a spike in sales. So I guess its not a bad thing.

See ya - Kent
