http://www.ptboatforum.com/cgi-bin/MB2/netboardr.cgi?cid=101&fid=102&tid=1321

Hey everyone! Good news! The people at the excellent Naval Historic website, called NAVSOURCE.org have just opened a new section covering PT Boats. It lists all USN PT Boats and PTC's along with photos and a short synopsis of the unit history. It is still under construction, but what Master Chief Joe Radigan (the section editor) has gotten installed so far looks very good! Here is the link you should check it out for yourself. Jerry

It's great to see NAVSOURCE finally getting a PT section. Problem is, there are a lot of identification and technical errors! For example, PT-7 is described as aluminum, but was wood. PTC1-12 (70' ELCOs) are listed as 63' boats and are clumped with the MIAMI 63' PTCs. Boats identified as PT 71 and 72 are actually two of the 69' boats built for the RNN. I'm going to drop them a line and offer clarification assistance.

As I clicked on a PT boat for picture, I noticed a number like 73k
in the column name size. Can someone tell me what that stands for?

Victor,
That number refers to the photo size, expressed in kilobytes (k).

Yes the Navsource site is confusing and still under construction.

Does anyone know if ELCO built any 63' Crash Boats?

On a side note, I visited Kingston NY last month, quite the operation!

Visited my old Sea Scout boat the 1357, hope to see PT/AVR drag races on the Hudson!

Eyeballing the hull designes between the 1357 and other PT hulls, the 63 had tighter ribbing and framework with a deeper bow rise for offshore seas. Would be great to compare speed trials with PT 728 and 1357 both with GM-8V92's.

No, Elco did not build them, Miami Ship Yard did.

I was just on that site and I did not see any reference to PT-7 being aluminum and the descriptor (in yellow) for PTC 1-12 ...have them as 70 footers.

The Master Chief and I have been corresponding a bit and he's been making some changes as he goes. There were still some problems with the PTC entries last time I looked, but I'm sure he'll get them sorted out.

The Miami boats, the 63 footers had Hall-Scotts and the Elcos had Packards, yes I realize that ....

The technical specifications listed on NAVSOURCE for PTC 13 to PTC 66 are valid only for the ELCO boats. PTC 37-66 were 63' Design 293 boats based on the original Miami Shipbuilding Design 152 and were built by Trumpy.

Basic Specs:

63' 0" x 15' 5" x 3' 11"
31.5 tons
2 - Hall-Scott Defender engines

The Master Chief is doing well; just needs to "tweak" a few things.

He has the armament for 556,557, 558, and 559 wrong - I've emailed him on that today. Also, I've advised him of the 48's ultimate fate as well.
