Some of you might have seen the picture of an entirely built out of wood
PT boat model and in natural wood color in Photobucket. Can someone
please furnish me with information about it as to scale, material, builder's
name, where display, etc.? Thanks!

Victor,

I have not seen the photos to which you are referirng but this could be the Varney kit (80 Foot ELCO). This kit is predominately wood, with some metal and plastic parts. The kit was advertised as 3/16” scale (1/64). Varney was purchased by Lindberg and the kit was ultimately released completely in plastic.

Other wood kits of the 80 foot are from Dumas (two separate kits) and Blue Jacket models. There were a few wood kits of the 70 foot Elco (Comet Models and E Z Craft).

Hi Bill, Thanks for your reply. The model I refered to was not a kit. It's
a hand built model entirely of wood. It was not painted but in the color
of the redish wood. It is one of a kind creation I think.

Hi Victor,
I knew that I have seen this before, and you may be thinking of this particular model from an outfit called "Yachts Down Under". Here is a photo of their wood and brass model of PT109 I think it is a georgeous model personally, but it also is pretty expensive. It is SCALE 1:15.

Here is their website address:

Good luck with your search!

Very pretty model, but totally incorrect in its detail. For the money, not a wise choice to purchase. Not knocking anyones work here, but my models are much better in detail.

Agreed.

But - I THINK I know the photo to which Victor is referring to, ... it's of an Elco 80 footer out of wood and it appears to have been just varnished - absolutely NO paint at all. Really attractive too.

Years ago, Alyce Guthrie of PTBI emailed me a photo of it which I believe was taken outside of PTBI HQ, that's all I can tell you.

Garth;
The one you are speaking of was in the front office of PTHQ when I was there in Dec 1997. It was displayed in a glass case. I was told it was all made of mahogony. A squadron flag was displayed above it on the wall, I believe RON 21 or 27.
take care,

Hello all,
Hey Frank,
I have no connection to the Yachts Down Under model, but just to satisfy my curiosity what are the "numerous details" they got wrong on their PT109 model? I admit you have a much better eye for that kind of stuff than I do! Please let me know, thanks Jerry

PS Does anybody have a photo that they could post here showing that other one Garth mentioned? Thanks Jerry

Jerry,

To my eye, from the photo posted, the major errors are the undersized torpedo tubes and the splash skirt around the forward (starboard) twin-.50 turret...

Otherwise, besides the unpainted deck, it looks pretty good...

That having been said, I have never, ever really seen what I think is a totally accurate representation of PT 109 (unless it's of the boat as it looked fresh from the factory), in any published photos of any model, done in any scale or medium -- ever. Some have been close, but no cigar.

Thanks Drew,
Yes I see that now that you point it out. Only the aft ring rails had the skirt around them right? and the torpedo tubes do look sort of too small dont they? One other thing I see is the gun tubs look tilted forward and they were straight until later models if I recall. Thanks Jerry

Jerry

I sure did not mean to open up a can of worms, but number one:

1. Gun Tubs are pooly detailed, showing an incorect gunners seat and
plastic stop that does not allow the gun tub to go sraight to the deck.

2. The spray shield around the rear gun tub lacks any detail of canvas
and the shape looks more like the tubs of a 77 footer.

3. Spray Shield around the forward gun tub was not present in any of
the 109 pictures I have seen.

4. The dead lights were flush to he deck, and these are raised, which
would have been easy to trip over no doubt.

5. The MK-8 Torpedoes are grossly undersized and do not fit the look
of a real 80 footer.

6. The paint scheme is totally wrong in what looks to be some sort of
Olive drab color, with a much too bright waer line Red.

7. Cockpit details are not that good, showing bright white inner dials.

This is just some items I have seen at a quick glance. Again, this is something that I would not pay the asking price for. I guess I have been spoiled seeing my own Museum Quality Models, and some of the excellent work done here by members of this board. I certainly an not knocking this Company, but once again, it goes to show that people are willing to release these boats to the public, without doing thier homework. By the way, for the money, Italeri's plastic model is by far superior to this model. This is just my thoughts..............

Thank you guys for all the informations, pictures, and comments on this wooden PT boat. That's more than I hope for. In fact I like to take this opportunity to thank the MESSAGE BOARD as a whole. It is truly an
unique organization that I am proud to be a member.
God bless you all,
Victor

Hi Frank,
I truly had not noticed all those little details. Thats why, like Victor, I also like this message board so much! I recently bought an Italieri PT596 model kit and am diligently working on building it now. I can see what you are talking about concerning the Down Under model, and agree with your opinion about them. Although I must admit that I still like the "wooden plank" look on the deck of the model. I never even saw what the asking price for the model is? I probably would not be willing to pay it at any rate. Thanks again Frank, for your detailed reply. Jerry

I just did a PT BOAT MODEL key word search in Google and selected IMAGES and that was one of them.

It's not the one from yachtsdownunder . . . . I do not know the scale.
