look at the 2008 aerial photo Shane took coming over from southern point of Munda towards Bau and Lumbari. What do you remenmber as Lumbari the closer Island to Bau or the next one up?

hi ted i do not remember too much of bau.when i was at rendova i could hear the steady,every day/night bombing of rabaul.you could hear the " whoomp whoomp of the bombs explloding.i think it was the right,inj my photo,drydock we used to dive off.i did not stay there very long sorry i can not remember mucjh about the sequence of the islands. earl

Ted: I don't recall the names of the islands even being mentioned when we were there. We just called the base "Rendova". Being a torpedoman and not a quartermaster I did not have access to the maps to identify the islands..

ted don,t know if this helps or not but i noticed in one site that lumbari island was shown as; 08 degrees.24S,157 degrees .19 degrees E lumbari is at north end of rendova earl

I have been watching this discussion with great interest. We are blessed to hear (read) what people who have actually "been there" say. I have tried to put together what I have heard you say. I can edit any mistakes if you point them out.

A description of entering the harbor from the western entrance from:
Pacific Islands,Vol.1 (Western Groups) Fourth Edition 1908 (page 294-5)

"Under favourable conditions of light, the Western entrance is recommended; its general width is about 1ТН cables. The tidal streams are much less felt than in the Renard entrance, and also when once the entrance between the reefs has been made, there are no dangers to be avoided, except an off-lying reef, which dries in patches, the northern extreme of which lies with the south-west extreme of Lumibari island bearing N.E. ТН E., distant 2ТМ cables.
After entering, a vessel should pass midway between Koru Koru island and Lumbari island, the reef being steep-to on either hand; then rounding the southern end of Lumbari island, at a not less distance than a cable, may proceed to an anchorage as requisite. There is no passage for vessels northward of Lumbari island.
Boat passages.-There is a passage for boats over the reef northward of Lumbari island; and it is also possible at high water to pass through the break in the islands to the westward of Bau island over the reef, where there is a small cocoa nut-planted islet in mid-channel."

Nat,

Great map you did there. One thing about the "unamed Island", is that it is the OBS. spot for the chart makers ( I do not make charts or maps so reckon it may be also known as a survey mark/bench mark whatever).

Lumbari is correct where you put it.

I found this picture of Lumbari Island online (Lumbari is left of center). This is the Western Entrance. Koru Koru Island is just visible to the right. The shoals north of Lumbari Island is clearly visible. Shane's "noname" island is on the far left. You are looking south southeast (150ТКSSE). I am jealous of those of you that have actually been there. As a non-vet it looks like paradise. To a vet it might remind you of nightly bombing.
