Is there a repository for Melville records? I'm mainly interested in officer class rosters and instructor rosters?

There isn't a repository that I've found. There's bits and pieces. Like Frank, I have some lists. Let us know what you're looking for and we'll see what we can come up with.

Frank,

I know my Grandfather William T. Shine, Jr. was an instructor there at some time during one of his furloughs home. Could you let me know if you have any records of him? Thanks!

My cousin - Robert W. Orrell, was promoted to Ensign on board PT 30 at Midway on 5 Jun 1942. In Nov 1942 he was sent on detached duty to "unknown location".

I'm assuming he was sent to Melville as an instructor or possibly to go through officer's training. I lose track of Robert until 4 June 1944 when he was assigned as commander of PT 523 at New York to be shipped to Mios Woendi.

After recovering from injuries received at Leyte Gulf, Robert was assigned to Melville staff on 19 Mar 1945.

Ensign Orrell was detached from Ron 1 on Nov 7, 1942 arrived at MTBSTC sometime after that and before December 31 as he is mentioned in the MTBSTC Newsletter, The Skeeter, in the December 31 issue as having recently arrived. Orrell was on staff but I'll have to dig through to see if it is mentioned what he did.

He is reported (in the Skeeter) to have been promoted to Lt (jg) in the May 6, 1943 issue.

Do you have a time frame William T. Shine, Jr was there?

When I talked with Grandpa before he passed he wasn't sure of the exact dates but it was during his furlough which began a few days before the invasion of Leyete. He got married in late December 1944 so I believe he started instructing there in January 1945. After serving as an instructor for an unknown time period, he was shipped to Zamboanga and eventually the Basilian Islands. So if you could, see if you have any record of him from December 1944 and later. Thanks!

Frank:

Any chance you might check your MTBSTC records to find any listing for Allan L. Lawrence, QM2/c assigned in January, 1944 as an instructor?

Thanks much.

Allan
