Does anyone have any memories of leave in Australia during the War.Any that can be told on this family message board that is,lol
Thought you might like to see a souvenir pennant from WW2 that i purchased a while ago.I know the Aussie shielas (girls) went for you good lookin yanks.Thats why im here,ha ha.

ps, the medals are copies of the ones awarded to my Grandfather,except for the Purple Heart.

I never went to Australia for R&R, but I was in Australia for a week or two in December of 1943. Several of us were awaiting transportation to New Guinea. Our transportation proved to be a slow LST. While in Brisbane we stayed in a tent city base downstream from Brisbane on the Brisbane river. The mosquitos were almost unbearable--much worse than I saw later in New Guinea.
What I want to relate is Christmas, 1943, at the beach. A group of us took a train south to the Gold Coast area. It is a beautiful area with almost endless beaches. The waves could roll in undisturbed all the way from South America. We had an enjoyable day just playing around in the sand and in the water. I do not remember the menu for that day, but I am sure that it was not turkey. Later that day we returned to the base, and in a few days we were on the LST bound for New Guinea.

im glad to say the Mozzies arnt that bad anymore here in Brisbane.
The Gold Coast is still beautiful,although very built up now.If your interested ive included a great site that has many pictures of the camps and bases in Australia during the war.

My dad sailed a T2 tanker, the Turkey Island to Perth, loaded with PT's.
I remember him saying the locals treated him well and developed a fine addiction to the beer!
I myself visited Sydney in 78 on the USCGC Glacier enroute to McMurdo Antartica! I agree with my father...About the Beer!
