I happened to run across your forum. Sergei K Aalto was my father and he never spoke of his time as a UDT member. I have seen the USN photo and a Post magazine photo that identified him and noted with interest the operations he participated in that were mentioned by Ted Walther. How do I find out more about his service details? Thanks. |

Welcome aboard Kristen!!!!
I must say, the Edward Steichen;s photo of your father was one that inspired several generations of young men to join the Underwater Demolition Teams and later the SEAL Teams.
Sergei K Aalto was a Painter 2/C, who was originally a Seabee based at either Camp Peary(Williamsburg Va) or Camp Bradford(Now Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Storey, Virginia Beach, Va). When they asked for volunteers, he rogered up and went to NCDU/UDT training. He was a plankowner of Underwater Demolition Team 4, and as far as I know, he stayed with UDT 4 for the entire war.
I researched his background several years ago, but after he left the Navy, all the info the UDT/SEAL Museum had on him was that he moved to Mexico sometime in the late 60's or early 70's, and they lost touch with him.
For info on what your Dad did with UDT 4: http://www.viewoftherockies.com/UDT4.html

Also google SWEDE UDT 4 and several photos will come up of him and his UDT 4 Buddies.

Ted,
According to a memoir that my brother sent to me, Sergei K Aalto started at Camp Perry and the last 13 months of his service were spent in Hawaii with an assignment to the staff of the Training and Experimental Base teaching the handling of explosives, then was sent to instructor training school connected with the Red Cross where he received training that qualified him to train new instructors in water safety - senior life guard, underwater swimming, surf swimming, combat swimming, and beginner swimming. I saw a picture that identified a man as Swede and it was not my father. Since he was very proud of his Finnish heritage, it struck me odd that he would go by Swede; but then I could be wrong.
