Frank;
go to google and put in this: Searching for John Ford: A Life By Joseph McBride
go to page 406 Admiral Bulkeley recalls when asked about Robert Montgomery, He was assigned as Bulkeley's RON 7 Executive Officer as a LCDR.(which was usually a position filled by a senior LT., usually the Commanding Officer was a LCDR) in New Guinea. I believe I read in Jack Searles book after the Miami incident Montgomery requested combat duty.
In the photos you mention of him at the plant in Bayonne, is he on or near a boat at the pier? If so please post it.
Thanks,
TED

Thanks Ted

I appreciate the effort. No, Montgomery is standing on the dock with Elco Executives, Irwin Chase, Preston Sutphen, and others. Not near a PT BOAT.

Ted

It seems that John Waune was exempt from the service when Pearl harbor took place ( he was 34 at the time) Wayne did not enlist and was a 3A Status, which was a family deferment.

His selective service records indicate that he did not attempt to prevent his reclassification as 1-A ( draft eligible), but Repulic pictures stepped in and requested furthur deferment. In 1944, Wayne was again classified as 1-A, but the Studio obtained abother 2-A deferment for suppoirt of national health, safety, or interest. He reamined this way until the end of the War. He did go to the pacific in 1943-44 for three months touring US BASES and HOSPITALS. It is said that Waybe was forever guilty for not serving in the Military.
