That small scale you did looks wonderful. I would love to see other pictures from different angles, but from this high level, it sure looks like the real thing. Your water looks great. Too bad you do not have the time, because I think you could do a real master piece for my Exhibit..........

Thank you. I updated the original post and added some more photos and zoomed it a little tighter. If you look closely you can pick out the figures.

After I finish the airplane on my workbench I'm starting on the USS Geneva and a 1/35 LCVP for my wife's Uncle. That along is going to take me a bunch of time, especially the 1/700 USS Geneva APA-86. You should see 1/700 LCVP's. I suppose I could add some 1/700 Higgins PT's to that diorama.... okay, I'm back to my senses. :-)

A grateful thanks to all of you gifted model builders for the recreations that you have contributed. You have given us a great view of what the WWII sailors saw every day and we can only visualize through your skill.

Ahoy there Dave-

OH MY GOSH! You say that diorama is 1/700 scale??? What did you use to assemble it with a microscope??? Overall, fantastic job, Dave!!

I do remember seeing the article on that German sub in Fine Scale Modeler! That water is the greatest! I'd like to know what medium he used to get that affect! I do some waterline models as well and I use Durhams water putty, with Windsor and Newton oils for the water and then topped off with 4 coats of high gloss poly gel to make it shine. Whoever did that sub has the effect down to a fine science.

Oh yeah, where the heck di you find the figures for that 1/700 scale PT boat?? Forget that, how the heck did you paint them?? Just fantastic Dave, all kidding aside, great job!!

Smooth sailin'

I actually reached out to Andy who did this water diorama. Here's what he wrote back...

"The article on making water is a good idea, although I dont think I will be able to tell you anything new... This method is old and was described several times by other modelers.
The base of my dio is a mix of styro-foam and plaster. First of all I did not cut the bottom of the sub - it still is a solid hull submerged into (or surrounded by) lots of little pieces of Styro-foam glued together with white glue. I would say its pritty much the same method as model train layouts with mountains, valleys and othe relief...
When basic wave "layout" was set, everything was covered with layer of plaster. Actually I used just a cheap wall compound from closest Home hardware store and I spreaded it using a kitchen spoon :-)))))
After 24 hours everything was painted including the sub. Top of waves with lighter shades of blue/grey - bottom of the wave - darker shades. I used to work at sea on container carrier so I had to spend A LOT of time on the deck and on the bridge watching all kinds of waves and squalls :-)
When the paint job is done I put 3 layers of Realistic water by Woodland scenics.
The final step was to imitate all the water coming off the sub's hull. I used all sorts of crap - pieces of plastic cover for the cakes, stretched clear plastic sprue, clear rubber glue (dont remember the brand)..."

Okay, that said I would also recommend reading Rusty White's method over at modelwarships.com. He has also produced them in CD form for Flagship Models. He uses Sculpy and Acrylic Gel Medium.

To make my water diorama I first laid in several coats of Acrylic Gel Medium over the base and sculpted some water movement into it. It's very easy to work with and very forgiving. Once dry (24 hrs later) I started building up the wavers until I was happy with the results. Then I painted the base color of blue/green. After that dried I mixed the base color with white and painted in the swells. Finally I added the white with a top coat of Future Floor Polish. All paint is water based.

To attach the figures and photo etch I had a hooded magnifier used in conjunction with a lighted magnifying glass I have attached to my work table. I attached everything with Elmers white glue, not CA glue. Every time I finished attaching something it was like I was coming up for air after a deep dive. It was stressful but a good feeling once in place.

The figures are from Eduard. They are pre colored. Technology is a wonderful thing.

Okay, I've given away all the secrets. :-) Thanks for the kind words. It was a lot of fun.

Hi Frank,
I wish I could make it out there. That's a long way from home unfortunately. If I'm close I'll try and get up that way.
