If you have this already, my apologies.

4-22-1944 – Transferred from RON 18 to USS Solace (hospital ship) for transfer to Mobile Navy Hospital (MOB) 9.

5-12-1944 – Transferred from USS Solace to MOB 9 (Brisbane, Australia).

6-23-1944 – Transfer from Fleet Hospital 109 (MOB 9 changed names) to Receiving Barracks 134 (Brisbane, Australia)

[Can’t track him during this time but am sure he was getting transport back to the US.]

8-14-1944 – Arrived at MTBSTC (Melville) from Receiving Barracks Bremerton, Washington.

9-27-1944 Transferred from MTBSTC to Squadron 4.

9-27-1944 Received at RON 4.

12-23-1944 Transferred from RON 4 to Naval Hospital, Newport RI

12-23-1944 – arrived Naval Hospital, Newport, RI

1-9-1945 – Transferred from Naval Hospital, Newport to Naval Hospital, Chelsea, Mass

I’m also guessing when he enlisted (on October 5, 1942), he was enlisted as a 2nd Class Machinist’s Mate. This had to be because of his experience. Another thing to look at is his age (Born 1898). Do you think he could have had prior service in WWI? [UPDATE - I just checked WWI databases and his name doesn't come up. So I guess that is not the case.]

He transferred from the Naval Training Station, Newport, RI to the Receiving Station, Boston on 11-10-1942 before transferring to MTBSTC on 12-5-1942. [All students at MTBSTC went to the Boston Receiving Station before their PT class.] So he wouldn’t have had time to do anything before then unless he went through some orientation class. (couldn’t find anything on the muster reports for NTS Newport).

His draft card from 1918

I really want to thank all of you for providing me some more info regarding Uncle Leonard's service. I did submit a request to the National Personnel Records Center. I'm not sure what I will get or even if the request will be honored. I don't have a death certificate or obit as he died in 1951.

He bounced (living) between his 2 sisters--my grandmother in Charleroi (south of PIT) and Aunt Bertie who lived in Philadelphia. Not sure which mill he worked in but it was while he was living in Charleroi so it probably was in Monesen.

I see in the RON 18 muster rolls that he was D.C. (?) that resulted in lost of pay for 2 months. What is D.C.?

I'm also hoping to learn the reason he was transferred to the Solace then on to the hospital.
Talk about a small world a friend of my wife's served on the Solace from before the war (yes she was at Pearl during the attack) thru the entire war and beyond. She was a head nurse and made Lt. Commander during the war only to be riffed and worked here way back to LCMD and retired.

Thanks to all and stay safe
Bill

PTBM has a collection of RON18 photos taken by LCDR Edwin Polk. You might want to take a look at what's in there.

DC is a Deck Court Martial. He did something bad to get his pay reduced (basically a fine) and was restricted to base (or maybe the boat) for 4 weeks. They appear to be in Panama at the time (probably Taboga) so he couldn't get liberty for 4 weeks.
