What is that object behind the officers head?
Jeff, I can't actually find it at the moment, but in the photo of 195 with the mottled paint on the charthouse, the life preserver is mounted there also.

Stuart,
The item behind the officer's head looks like the flash attachment on a camera, You can see the spiral-wound cord connecting the flash to the camera. They would be used in daylight to eliminate shadows. My father and grandfather used them and there was a button on the flash attachment to eject the spent bulb. As a kid I learned the hard way that the used bulb was quite hot!

Oops, I didn't go to the second page of the thread to see that the flash attachment was already identified.

Thanks Charlie I think you nailed it.
That sure is an odd limiting rail on the turret, I don't know what I'm looking at. The legs look like they mount to the chart house roof for one thing.

Jeff;
Nice catch! This is very early in the Squadron’s timeline. John Harlee was constantly encouraging improvement on his boats. (If you read the book “Hell on Keels: The saga of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron Twelve “ by the late Rick Desloge, you will see this. It’s on Kindle, and it’s excellent.)
The limiting rail/depression rail is modified, I have photos of most of the RON 12 boats and they all have modified depression rails on the Stbd turrets, on some boats they even removed the depression rails off the port turret entirely.
Take care,
TED

Here's a picture of the 195 in Taboga, Panama Canal Zone I just found at the National Archives. Taken in 1943. The man in the suit is Ralph A. Bard, Assistant Secretary of the Navy,

Charlie - thanks for the picture of the 195. My dad served aboard the 195 from 1944-45 so was not on the boat at the time of the picture. Doug

Thanks Ted. Here's the 195, with Russ Pullano as triggerman, with no rails on the aft turret:
And at one point, supposedly 1944 according to the 1st photo I posted, a 20mm in the fwd and aft turrets:
