This is an example (from the village) of what I was looking for. The marks up the trunk were probably down by those that climbed and nailed in hooks, etc., for the wires and hanging things-- it is not from the locals. The trees were used as ready made telephone poles...lol.
This tree would have been shorter during the period of the war- and the holes could have been much closer to the ground I reckon. Then the holes might have been for other purposes than to run wires. Both this tree and the "Wally Tree" might be considered a "witness tree" of sorts- not necessarily to battle, but to history at war.
