Thanks guys. The DUKW is still in use??? Dang, that tells me the engineering on them is very impressive to have lasted this long. It reminds me of the BMG .50 M2, another piece of impressive engineering still in wide use today.

Those "baskets", I remember that question being asked a while back. From what my fuzzy memory remembers Al or Chip said that they were used to hold rescue / landing nets so that they could be dumped quickly over the side. But I'm not sure.

Thanks Jeff! The idea of them being used to hold rescue / landing nets so that they could be dumped quickly over the side sounds familiar to me as well. That must be what they are for! Also did you notice those 2 big "scoops" on the bow of PT84 in those pictures I posted under the heading "Some old PT Boat pictures I gathered in 2013 at Rose Festival"? They are probably the same thing? Very strange these PT Boats.....I should investigate this subject further.

You're welcome Jerry although I could be wrong. Damn this getting old thing! I saw them, I thought they were covered guns but you may be right. The stbd object looks like it has 2 pedestals which a gun wouldn't have although it could be something else...:

This is supposed to be the 84, the mortar looks near to at least 1 37mm:

Does anyone have a clearer shot of the 84's bow? I had a few but the deck shows nothing installed. 1 from Samar (boat stripped) and 1 from what might be early days.

All;
Rescue gear could be a use for those baskets, but I thought they also used them to secure extra rubber fuel bladders, for extended missions, such as their proposed resupply missions to Denmark Resistance Fighters.
Take care,
TED

You know, if they were guns covered by canvas that might be how they look when the canvas is affected by high speeds? It sort of "inflates" or acts like a sail and billows? I never considered that. As for the two pedestals, that may be a centerline pedestal for another gun that is in the foreground but looks like a second pedestal, sort of like an optical illusion?

You might be right Jerry, I've been fooled before thinking something in the background was part of what I was looking at.

Ted, you might be right too. I found out that Andy Small's research indicated that that's what they were meant for, holding rubber fuel bladders. Interesting...
