Lew;
While your smoke generator looks great, I am not sure this version was on PT 61 when she was refitted as a Gunboat (Sept 20-Oct 4,1943 by USS Argonne). While it was used up until refit, I can't say for sure if it was carried over. PT 59's was not, 59's was replaced by the standard model carried on the 80 foot boats.
I do know PT 61 did not have one after her service as a gunboat. Feb 8, 1944 she was turned over to COMNAVBASE New Georgia to be used as a small boat.

PT 59 Oct 1943.

PT 61 after re-designation to small boat 1944.

If Italeri were to do a 1/35th scale PT 45-68 77' Elco kit, hopefully they'll include both types of smoke generators...

Frank, Made this 1/24th scale drawing of PT-61 in 1994 based on pictures and info from Ken Prescott. Details of the Mk-2 smoke generator are a bit off, but the location of the Mk-2 shown on the overhead view is correct. Hope this helps.

Thanks Wayne, did you ever send me this drawing? I am pretty sure Stan has this one.

Frank;
No I recently sent you a copy of Wayne's drawing, which he originally sent me with my 1/24th 77' model.
Take care,
TED

Ah, more confusion. Wayne's drawing is in direct conflict with the Al Ross drawing of the PT61 Gunboat as far as the SG is concerned. I will keep the current SG (aligned fore-aft) util I find otherwise (if that will ever happen). Either way, the Elco 77 gunboats will make a very interesting model and am looking forward to finishing it. Had shoulder surgery last Friday ("good" arm) so my model building is set aside for a few weeks.

Have any of you figured out what the small "tabs" along the side about 10" (real) above waterline are? They are at bulkheads 23, 34, 41, 48, 56, & 59.

Hi Lew, Al Ross's PT-61 gunboat drawing featuring the later type smoke generator would be correct. As Ted mentioned, PT-59 also had the Mk-2 generator at the same time period as 61 did. I think it would be safe to assume when 59 and 61 were converted to gun boats by the Tender USS Argonne these craft received the newer type generator as an update. By fall of 1943 many PT's received updated equipment.
