Ahoy there.
I've been busy sesrching old threads fo info about the 20mm cartridge bag. Not many mentions of it at all. However I did discover that almost all 80' Elco boats removed the 20mm gun shield that weighed around 250 pounds. I guess if the gun shield was removed that most likely the cartridge bag wasn't used either. Perhaps it got in the way of rapid movement of the gun?
The mortar I had on this model was an 81mm one. The platform for it visible in my recent photos doesn't show the inner ring that mage the tracking ring. I put this on the boat because I'd seen a image of it in a book and based my mortar mount on it. It might have been Victor's original edition book that has the image. If I recall correctly the book title was U.S. PT Boats In World War 2.
I still would like to find out if it was an 81mm mortar in that location.
Cheers from Peter

I have only seen 60mm motors used on PT's which were primarily used for illumination.

Ted,
That clears up a question I had about how effective a mortar would be on a boat. Illumination was.... illuminating for me. Sorry... had to say it. Did you ever get any feedback on how effective that was?

Dave;
Well I could say that would depend on who was using it. Honestly, its not that hard, once you set distance and elevation, drop three rounds and your done, once they float down too low fire three more.
Now on our later boats in the 80's and 90's we used both the 60 mm. navy pattern mortar (aka: 60mm Mk 4 Mod 0 naval mortar) and the Navy pattern 81 mm. mortar (aka:81mm Mk 2 Mod 0 naval mortar) on a tripod mount, but that is a different story.
Take care,
TED
FYI: Just as a note for reference, we used in the 60mm: M83 (ILLUM)Illumination Round. Length 14.28 inches, weight 3.7 lbs, uses a magnesium parachute flare to light up battlefield at night. Ejected by the action of the adjustable mechanical time fuze, the flare burns for approximately 25 seconds and descends at about 10 feet per second, while producing 145,000 candlepower. The illuminated area is about 100 yards in diameter. Range – 1,000 yards (maximum) at 800 feet altitude (maximum)
for 81mm we used: M301A3 (ILLUM) illumination Round. Length 22.73 inches, weight 10.1 lbs. minimum effective range 109yds(100m), maximum effectve range 3,445 yd (3,150 m) uses a magnesium parachute flare to light up battlefield at night. effected bursting area 3,609 ft (1,100 m) diameter producing 500,000 candlepower and burns for 60-75 seconds .

Hi WIll . . .
Glade to see you remembered to change the "IMG" to "image"
On your Photobucket account you clicked on the IMG link which is good, but unlike this board's PTBOATS account I set up, I also modified the (choose) which linking types available to members. On the board's account the IMG link does not include all the URL data garbage like in your account. Additionally I gave the option to use the HTML link codes (simpler).
You might want to try selecting the "Link to share this Photo" HTML link style the next time. No modifications needed.

Peter Tare Builder,
I'd ditch the armor shield on the stern 20 mm gun and add a shell-catch bag. To me, the bag is a little something extra not usually seen on PT models.
Looking at vintage photos of PTs "out in the area," I can only remember one -- of boats nosed in at Tulagi -- in which armor shields are present on 80-footer's stern 20 mm guns, but several in which the shell catch bags are attached. Some boats had them and others did not.
