Geary Sims sent me this a while back:
Reference the 37mm gun: Doing extensive research on PT 108 which also had the same 37mm gun, I found there are some myths. One, the 37mm anti-tank wasn't found, in fact there were 8 to 10 boats that had/were to have this mounting. It was an experimental mounting to see if the 37mm gun was effective against the Daihatsu barges. The guns came from and were mounted by members of the US Army 25th Infantry Division. From conversations with Dick Keresey and some of the 108 crew, Kennedy may have been the one who came up with the idea for the mounting.
Secondly, the newer mountings were not salvaged from P-39's. They were adapted by the Navy and the Elco plant to fit the PT Boats. The 108 received one plus the roll-off torpedoes.
The 109 was slated for the mounting of the 37mm on her return from that mission. That is why she had the lumber lashed to the deck. Didn't want to leave on the dock for it might not be there when they got back.
So it seems it was just a temporary mount and that the gun was not ready to be fired.

I have completed my 109 model Christmas present. I does look like the 80 foot Elco's I saw in the Solomons alright. That 37 mm artillery gun on the bow, how did the aim that thing? Is a crew available from Itilari for this model?

Hi CJ,
There is no 109 crew yet for this model but I think it is under consideration by Italeri. We'll have to be patient and see what they bring us. I hope you had fun with your kit!

Great info on the first PT 37mm field pieces, Jeff, thanks.
I've never read or come across any information that pointed to the way the 109's 37mm gun was mounted was anything other than a temporary, jury-rigged set up, to be more securely mounted later.
Dave, I hope you're right on the Italeri 109 crew figures -- although I already have a set of the (expensive) PT 596 figures that would fill in nicely (although the 40mm gun crew would have to be modified).

Jeff D.
A question to you re. the .50 cal Barrel Jacket was there 5 rows of cooling holes or 6?
While doing a setup for machineing up some brass sleeves for a bit of interest on the 596 Boat I got a little stuck on this point and I could not find any notes on your website that had this info,
Going by your drawing there appears to be 5 but this does not work out when I stagger them on the tube as the last row lines up with the first,
Hopeing you can help

Sure thing Drew, happy to share.
There are 6 rows David, on my drawing there is 1 pointing straight up and 1 straight down, then 2 on each side of the jacket.

Jeff,
Just a small point I find that the full length of the Jacket on the Drawing you posted is 28 3/8 " were as if I scale your drawing up using your 1' squares I get 28 3/4'. were there any revisions done to this drawing or am I wrong in my scaleing

The Army jacket drawing doesn't show the threaded breech bearing that gets welded on the gun end of the tube , and mine doesn't show the end of just the jacket part. The jacket doesn't go all the way into the bearing, this drawing of the breech bearing should clear things up:
