There is no doubt that enough boats, platforms, and blueprints exist so that a project of this nature could be done. The hardest part is to convince the powers to be that a movie involving WWII PT BOATS could make a profit and show interest to movie goers.

I would relish the idea, and would love to work closely with an outfit that took on this task, hell I bet most of us would. The new movie coming out, "Red Tails" deals with the black pilots of WWII, something that had been done before. I am not sure how recent WWII movies have done at the box office, like "Saving Private Ryan", or "Band of Brothers", but I would guess they were smash hits. All of us here on this message board would love to see a movie about PT BOATS, but the big question is how do you present it to the movie people. It would have to be something real juicy, and might just have to contain two movies already done in the past, like PT-109, and They were Expendable". Both dealing with larger than life characters. Let's not forget that President Kennedy's death will mark the 50th anniversary in another year, a perfect time to consider another PT-109 movie.

I would love to push however, the rescue of General MacArthur. This is something that was done many years ago, and I wonder how many people are even aware of this key event that took place. It could not only center on the rescue itself, but the untold story of those brave crews that took to the hills when their boats were destroyed. Endless possibilities, which I often think about, but do not know on how to approach the big wigs.....................

All;
My Ideas are more like Tulagi and the Tokyo Express(which could show a RON 3 rescue of MacArthur as an intro, then with a subtitle saying ....SIX MONTHS LATER.....TULAGI 10/12/42) and something later, like Surgiao Strait and the Murry Preston action or maybe the Med- RON 15, 22, and 29 actions, this one could actually have some romance in it with them being in Italy, Corsica, and Southern France, plus Hollywood is too into remakes lately, it is like the creative minds have left and a remake mentality has replaced it. Personally, I don't think any John Wayne movie should be subject for a remake. And PT 109 has become a cult classic that should also be left alone. If there is a movie to be made about the Boats, it should be fresh and new. The only ones that can do this type of movie justice as far as directors go are Clint, Spielberg, Jerry Bruckhiemer or Micheal Bay, That's it. Why?? because they are all proven fanatics for realism in recent war movies.
Take care,
TED

P.S. THE SOMETHING LATER PART WOULD BE THE SECOND MOVIE The Tulagi movie could go all the way up to Rendova or Torokina, this way the JFK actions(109 and 59) could be used as a side story to be included. But the action of PT 167 and the torpedo planes must also be included, So say Tulagi to Green Island(Oct 1942- Jan 1944).
Take care,
TED

I agree with Ted, however, when 95% of all todays High School students would be hard pressed to know anything at all about WW2 (even down to the most basic details of who won, who did we fight against, etc) I have very dim hopes that any of todays movie producers would take a gamble to make a full blown movie production about a PT Boat. Very sad I agree, but all too true. I for one will not be holding my breath waiting for this to happen. But it would be pretty cool if somebody did it.
Sorry to be a "Debbie downer. Jerry

I saw an interview with George Lucas on The Daily Show with John Stewart. Lucas got no support for his movie and had to finance it himself. He's wanted to do it for years. Don't expect to see an historically accurate movie. Lucas meant to entertain and inspire young black kids to recognize their heritage and motivate them to make the best of their lives. I'm interested to see the demographics at the theatre when I go this weekend (if I can go this weekend). Everyone I know that's going to see this movie are a bunch of old guys. At least I'll be in good company.

I just realized that I went off on a tangent thinking about the interview with George Lucas rather than what the post was about. Anyway, one thing he said was that 60% of movie revenue comes from foreign sales and that's one of the main reasons he couldn't get support for his movie. Can you imagine a movie about PT's generating interest outside the US?

I think the reason that recent WWII films have done well is because they have a good story behind them with general interest. It's going to take somebody more creative than me! :-)

I'm so happy that my son and I are not the only two people that thought this was a neat topic. Thanks for all of the great replies.

Camera platform ideas are great. I'm seeing Red Tail this weekend and will give an update on the CG.
