steve,
i will be at base 17 this coming february. odds are greatly against finding anything. but, i hope to find some locals who may still be alive and can pin point where the boats were burned.
from what i have seen on google earth, it looks like the base itself still exists, at least that is the land hasn't been completely re-used. it even looks like some of the old buildings are still there. hard to tell for sure though as the google images are not the high-res ones.
will report back when i get back.

Good luck in your ventures. It would be nice to learn that something might still exsist in this area. I think what you are doing is great. I have had several friends who have visited the pacific, looing for old Navy sites, but none who have actually visited BASE 17. A SAFE JOURNEY.......
