OK, my travelling is done, the earthquake and the hurricane have passed, I had the opportunity to search my files. And I found it.

the pt insignas or pins were sold at the small stores in Melville R.IIn 1944 after I came to the states from the Solomons I bought one Gold pt pin and maybe 4 silver pins. Thjey were elco boats as I still have them except I gave toAlice iat a bull session in Arizona.I also have aKennedy 60 pin .If you had the money you could buy any ]thing at the samll stores.I was 3rd class gunnersmate.outa here ole John Sullivan

Charlie;
There you go straight from a source, while as in todays Navy, gold usually means officer(the only exceptions that I know of of the top of my head is the SEAL Budwiser, Naval Parachutist,(Now both Gold for officer and enlisted)and the Special Warfare Combatant Craft Crewmen(Currently silver for both officers and enlisted) ), back in the day you could buy either as for PT Boats. However, with this said we must remember back in 1944, this was no more than a decoration/ornamint/sweethearts item. For example, CDR Alan Montgomery, RON 3(2) skipper wore a PT Boat tie clip in 1942 while in Panama.
Take care,
TED
