That "Know Your PT Boat" manual has these directions for the radio antenna: (the antenna)"...will freeze into one solid rod if you do not lubricate it and exercise its sections," and "...on patrol, it is ordinarily best to use maximum height."

This would indicate to me that the "whip" radio antenna was a telescoping affair of several (at least two) sections. Period photos seem to bear this out.
