Drew;
Actually to me it looks like a portion of the depth charge cradle has a section cut out/notched so it fits over the toe rail. Interesting. I wonder if this boat could be PT 114?? Too bad it was not a wider shot.
take care,

Ted:
Your last post has me curious. What is it about the photo that would make you think that it might be PT 114?

Allan;
Nothing really, just hoping for this to be a photo of LTjg Frank "Skipper" Dean's and ENS Carlton "Bird Dog" Byrd's boat.
Take care,

Really the most interesting thing about this photo, is that it appears that the RON 6 Base force guys, the Hull Tech's or whoever, used a cutting torch to notch out the Depth charge cradle to fit it over the toe rail, instead of the carpenters mates taking a hand saw and making a maximum 2 inch cut in each area of the toe rail to fit the depth charge cradle "though it" Dick unless you use your special super photo zoom-ability, this photo will always be a question.
Take care,

Ted: Are you saying the 114 boat was nicknamed BIRD DOG at some point? If so, I'll add it to the master name list.

Dave,
My understanding was the Boatswains Mates were assigned to a Squadron, not an individual boat. Each Squadron had at least a Chief Boatswain, whose job it was to manage the enlisted squadron staff and work parties. These individuals also rode boats on patrol, usually the boat being riden by the Squadron commander.
