Ed,

This is exactlly what I was looking for on those questions. Thank you, so much! I'm going to run with this, now!

I'm glad there were no railins on the 40mm mount nor a barrell depression rail. Makes a bit this easier.

Very nice work thus far. I am impressed when you consider how small the scale is. Can you imagine doing the same project using the 1/35 Italeri PT Boat. You would need two pool tables to put it on. Keep the photos coming, we love to see other's work on this site. Come on guys, I know many of you are working on projects, how about some photos.....

Thank you, very much, Frank!

I checked out your Mosquito Fleet Exhibit site. Very nice collection! The thought crossed my mind of putting you in my will and donate my Oyster Bay dio to your exhibit. (Just a thought, for now.)

Welcome aboard Carl. I will try to answer some of your questions. The boat crews generally did not spend much time on the tenders. I never saw any instance when electric power was supplied to a boat. We usually did not spent much time tied up to a tender. Time was limited to getting supplies and when necessary, repairs. We did not eat on the tenders, except when the boat was in a cradle. We did not sleep on the tender. Sometimes movies were attended. We did not tie up on the tender overnight unless the boat was disabled. At Morobe and Dreger each boat had its own dock . At Hollandia and Wadke we used the anchor. At Mios Woendi we had professionally build docks, courtesy seebees. I can not testify as to practices at other bases.

Thank you, very much, QM for responding to my questions! This is most valuable to me!

In my Navy time on submairnes, I am more accustom to subs alongside sub tenders and shore or tender supplied electrical power and if our galley was closed for repairs, etc. we'd eat on the sub tender.

I always suspected that access to the tender from the PT Boats would be via the boat booms extended out from the tender and the Jacob's Ladders hanging from them. Is there any truth to my hunch?

I suspect that the boats' officers would spend more time at the tender than the boats' crew members. Would they take the Jacob's Ladders or a whale boat to the tender's accommodation ladder?

Did you personally have any contact with the Oyster Bay or tenders of the same class like Willoughby or Wachapreauge? What Boat and Ron was yours?

Although I can't tell from the photos that I have of the Oyster Bay, I have always intended to depict the tender's boat booms extended out over the first boat in the nest. Would this be accurate, at all? I plan to have the most nested on the port side of the tender, and at least one on the starboard side, forward. And one aft on the port side refueling.

And keeping in mind that my diorama will portray a time period at Leyte in late October or in November 1944 anything more relevant to this event is even more valuable.

Most gratefully yours, Sir!

Carl

Very nice work Carl, especially when the scale is considered. The diorama should be awesome!

Very nice photographs of the Ship. In my new Book, "PT BOATS behind the SCENES", there is a section dedicated to the PT BOAT TENDERS, including roughly 40 different shots. I am waiting for my publisher to let me know when it will be coming out this year. In talking with many PT BOAT VETS over the years, it seems that everyone has a bit different story when it comes to the Tenders:

I do know that the boats supplies there own electric power with their Aux Generators to run lights, small refrigerator, and stove when the boats were not running, so I never heard of any Tenders supplying power, although if the Crews ate on the enders, it would save them from using their Aux Generators, which seemed to break down on occassion

Most that I have talked to never spent one night sleeping on a Tender, unless like QM mentioned, the boat was laid up for repairs. Most of the Skippers would tie up along-side to beg food for the crews, or grab much needed supplies.

They would sometimes get their Torpedoes from the Tenders, medical supplies, ammo, and other items needed. Sometimes before a Base was finished, Crews did mess onboard Tenders, but only until thier Quarters were finished, or a dock could be finished, then Crews slept on the boats, although Officers slept on-shore.

When the Tenders Evaporators were working, the men could get fresh showers, and they did come onboard for movies sometimes.

The Tenders were often right in the middle of the action, which is why many of them recieved battle stars. Only the USS NIAGRA was lost to enemy action, but the USS ORESTES was hit by a Japanese Dive Bomber, killing 45 men. The USS WILLOUGHBY was under general quarters for 11 straight hours, under daily air attack, and the USS JAMESTOWN recieved the Preidential Unit Citation. If I remember the USS OYSTER BAY was credited with one kill and assisted on three others. I think it was the USS HILO that recieved the most battle stars with eleven.

When the Tenders became much larger, the Boats could be picked up in Cranes so that hulls could be tended to.

Oh and by the way, that DIORAMA would look good in my Exhibit, just ask any of the guys here..........................

I think this will be the 490. I haven't come up with a 37mm solution, yet. Especially the big magazine on top. I'll probably end up depicting the guns with canvas covers over them so, the details of the 20mm and 37mm guns won't matter much. I'll probably use a 20mm for the 37mm gun with a "hump" under the canvas depicting the 37mm magazine.

The 40mm isn't the greatest. It's elevation is too, high but its glued pretty well. CA glue de-bonder didn't work very well. I have to use it, because there were only 8 of them in the pack.

I've added the circular gun foundation plates, ammo lockers, the 40mm, DC and Smoke Gen., torpedoes and empty torpedo racks. I've opened some deck hatches, as well as the cabin door to the bridge. I've given it a coat of the over all finish color.

The .50 cals will go on after I've darkened the insides of their "turrets?".

I'll have to do some retro-fitting on the 495 that I started long ago. This new one is almost farther long than the 495.

I'm starting to wonder if I'll make it through 8 PT Boats. I'll try.
